I just want to post that the virus has put a delay on passport renewals. They currently are not accepting expediting service and cannot guarantee any time line for mailin renewal. My passport expires this July and I spoke to a repressive on the toll free number and she recommended waiting on sending it in until the staff is back. I need the renewal for our Oct 31 trip and she said it may not be done by that time. I called back later spoke to another represtative and he was more helpful by saying if I send it now and I can follow up in July or August and upgrade to the expedited process if they up and running.
Thiis is just a heads up if you need a renewal.

Passport processing was suspended on 3/19/2020. If you need it in an emergency, you'll have to visit a passport office. Here is their FAQ https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/ea/passport-covid-19.html

Thanks for that headsup. I didn't even think about passport renewals. Ours are good until 2023, I think, so I hope this situation will be behind us by then.

I actually sent mine in and they received it Feb 10th. I still have not gotten it back. I had a trip to the BVI in June, which has been cancelled.

Our passports were going to be a few days short of having the required 6 months left on them when our May trip (since cancelled) was scheduled to end. We sent our passports in for renewal early Feb after returning home, and they were received Feb 25. At first the return time was supposed to be 6 to 8 weeks, then they said 8 to 10 weeks, now they say to expect significant delays and that it could be several months before our renewals are processed. We need the passports for an August trip, if that too doesn't get cancelled, and all they can tell us is to call again a couple of weeks before we're supposed to go. Not exactly inspiring confidence that we would get them back in time if needed.

The 6 month doesn't apply to SXM but would if you were planning on going to St Barths.

Both of these trips were to EU countries, 6 month rule applies there. Just replied and posted it here for info.
