This Monday I [57] will be taking my dad [82] on NCL cruise to Freeport, Nassau and Stirrup Cay. Any tips for things to do would be appreciated. He walks quite well with a cane,he could do a 15 minute walk to catch a bus somewhere but probably not much more. Can I trust a taxi to pick us up if I take him to Atlantis? Thanks for any ideas.

Have you considered health insurance in the (hopefully unlikely) event something should happen and the providers don't accept US insurance? Especially if medical evacuation is required. If interested click on TTOL sponsor link Insuremytrip It's really very inexpensive.

Thanks Tim, Yes Insurance was the 2nd item on the list right after booking the cruise. I normally travel with my husband and we always use Insure My Trip.

I assume you're talking about a land taxi vs water. The Atlantis is the biggest resort on Nassau and perhaps the Caribbean. Taxis are very easy to get from there and should only be about a ten minute drive back to the pier. I advise against taking a water taxi. I thought they were uncomfortable and took at least twice the amount of time than a land based taxi.
Nassau is pretty small and there isn't a heck of a lot to do on a one day excursion. Maybe a horse drawn tour and there is always the huge straw market. The aquarium at the Atlantis is very impressive and they have a large casino, by Caribbean standards.

You might find it worthwhile to take the ships excursion that goes to the Atlantis, if they have one. I say that because when we cruised to the Nassau , on the Oasis of the Sea, it was a mob seen to get a taxi. There was a lot of ships in that day so other times it might be better. It was not only busy but it was confusing getting to the taxis, because they would switch the lines at the last minute and you had to rush to the new spot. The walk from the ship to the terminal was also long. I would think the Ships tour might be better. You can check with them on the ship about this with the staff and other cruiser who have been there before. Coming back is much easier because you don't have the crush of people leaving at the same time. Delray
And now that my life is so prearranged I know that it's time for a cool change

I agree with Delray. Getting a taxi at the port is a real hassle.
As for the carriage ride, we did that, and did not think it worth the time or money. It was convoy of carriages, and we had a really difficult time understanding our driver. My husband (78) could not understand him at all between hearing aids, age and heavy accent.
We didn't go to the Atlantis, but taxis seemed to be plentiful everywhere. Make sure you ask what the fare is before you get in.
One of the advantages of taking the ship excursion with someone who can do limited walking is that they drop off and pick up in the most convenient areas most of the time.
Enjoy your trip. Sue

Thanks everyone. We're back and had a great time. My dad just loved the whole cruise experience. As soon as anybody saw his cane they just went above and beyond to help. As for taxis...they were everywhere.

So glad that everything worked out for you. It only took one cruise for us to fall in love with cruising. I'm guessing your dad will want to take another cruise.
