Hi All,
5 of us are heading out this May 18-28 from CYOA for our 2nd trip to USVI/BVI and want to include some time in the SVI this trip. Looking to visit Culebra, Culebrita, and check out the Bio Bay at Puerto Mosquito on Veiques. I’ve read some older reports of unattended dinghy & dinghy motor thefts, including cutting of locks and cables in the Esperanza area and I’m concerned about leaving the boat and dinghy while on a Bio Bay tour. So if weather conditions allow I’m currently considering anchoring in one of the adjacent bays and then scooting around in the dinghy to row in, or seeing if a tour company will meet us and let us break the group up in two shifts so one group can keep an eye on things while the other group does the tour, then swap.

Any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks very much,
Randy

Recommend you contact a reputable bio-bay tour company that uses an electric pontoon boat, or kayaks.
We have gone twice, and the first time was with a more 'fly by night' operation.
The operator had to borrow my light, let a kayak get loose, and almost drowned himself trying to swim to it with a paddle and no life jacket on.
If it were not for the swift actions of our crew he most certainly would have drowned.

Second time was in an electric pontoon boat, and it was great!

We take a ball off Esperanza. have not had theft problems. Maybe we got lucky.

Just read on a Vieques FB page that a dinghy was stolen in the past day or so from the pier at Esperanza. It was locked to a cleat but the thieves unscrewed the cleat. Dinghy was later recovered but with the motor missing. Apparantly the second theft this week.

I highly recommend the bio-bay tour. We used Melaya's Tours. They go out in smaller 10-15 group tours with glass bottom 2-person kayaks. I highly recommend them.

With the recent thefts, I would split up the group until this latest hoodlum(s) is caught.

Thanks Baardj. We really want to do a tour so thanks for the recommendation. Sounds like spitting the group is best at this point.
