Hi All,
I just found a bunch of vintage BVI slides in my parents basement from the early to mid 1970's. My father was a pretty avid photographer and has fantastic in air photos, Beef Island Airport (the old Airport Lounge one), Scuba (I think the Rhone), and lots from Marina Cay and Road Town. There might be a few Virgin Gorda and St Thomas sprinkled in also.

Is there any interest in these? I was thinking about setting up a website or Facebook page to post them on after I convert. I open to suggestions on the best way to share.

I just booked a trip to Tortola also. I just turned 40 and the last time I was there was 1984. Beyond excited to get back.

Picture attached is my brother and I (I'm on the left) Beef Island circa 1984

Thanks for posting. Would be interested in hearing how you convert them. We went through a similar cache recently - all slides.

We threw out all those from other Caribbean islands, but kept the BVI ones. Ours start in the 1960s, like waiting for the Beef Island ferry, before the bridge was built.

About 10 years ago I used a Nikon Cool Scan 5000 to convert slides to pics (tiff, jpg)...and edited with Adobe Photoshop

Later I just sent more of them away to this company...I have used them multiple times and they are very good.

Having done both I suggest sending them away because scanning them by hand and editing them was a huge PIA.

I have someone local that used an Epsom scanner specifically for slides and negative. It has a tray to mount multiple slide then uses software to convert them all saving a lot of time cropping and editing. Not sure how they will come out but he's confident he can get good quality. Can't hurt to try.

What do you guys think about a Facebook group. I don't like how facebook runs things these days but adding and accessing content is very easy. I'd like to see other peoples photos also.

I posted a few oldies circa 70's and 80's about 6 years ago, I will see if the thread is archived. Did the same thing, scans of slides. Sadly my stepdad, who took most of the pics passed away this past summer.

Here is the thread...

Sorry for your loss. I am cleaning out my parents home (father passed about 5 years ago) and many of his photos are bringing back memories of great times as well.

There is a Facebook page called BVI History and Heritage https://www.facebook.com/groups/726963414020898/ and I'm sure the members would really love to see some of your old pictures if you feel like posting any there.

As you saw, it's very easy to add pictures to an individual thread here. If you are able to post more photos of places, that would be very interesting to many here, I'm sure.. I personally do not care for Facebook at all, as it totally lacks organization or cohesion to me. Impossible to follow things on there.

Carol, no worries. Tried looking at that Facebook group and one can't see anything: it's private.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I might just post them here and create a Facebook group to accommodate everyone. I will start here of course. I have the transfer in progress and might have them back as early as today.

Here you go. Super happy that they came out pretty good. My mom and dad started going around 73 and stayed on Marina Key the first few years. They rented on Virgin Gorda a few times after my brother was born. When I was born in 1979 they started renting houses from the Dawson's on Beef Island. I have about 100 photos that I am figuring out the best way to organize.
