Knew the minute I hit town, something was wrong. No cars, no people, no nothing. All the stores were shut apart from the restaurants and there was garbage everywhere in the streets as drove through them, which apparently was the left overs from fires the night before. Could park where I wanted. Had lunch at Tropicana but the owner said the night before was terrible. Dinner for three people and they shut early and could see and smell fires burning from all over. Always have read about it(trouble, regardless where we have travelled)from afar, but the first time ever been actually in the heart of it so to speak. Also yesterday, after a downpour, only just made it through the floods going through the golf course.
A fun time indeed wave just another day in paradise. tgif and to quote a famous person. Tomorrow is another day.

Ok....so immediately I run the comparison to Jamaica and some Mexican resorts where you are reasonably safe if you stay on the resort...but...that is because of issues with harm towards tourists. THIS issue is personal to the residents and NOT singularly directed towards tourists ...it will definitely impact those staying on the French side but the residents are trying to make their point with their elected officials...

With this said it will definitely change my January plans with regards to places to go...my favorite Happy Bay might be off the radar and I will just enjoy the Simpson bay area. I will NOT put myself in the middle of their conflict....appropriate or not. I have no desire to visit Marigot now. and very little prior...

Just my opinion...and the "Day in Paradise" and "The Friendly Island" are dreams of the past.....I love SXM and have gone for around 20 years but I also have open eyes to what it is.....

We are staying in Oyster Pond, on the border, at the end of January. Hoping things calm down and go well for the locals and tourists alike.
