I just checked exchange rate and one US dollar equals .99 euro. Maybe if going to SXM one should consider getting euros?

Better rethink your math. You have it backwards.

Unless I'm missing something, what's the difference? You're ultimately going to pay the same amount. Pay now or pay later.

That was yesterdays quote to me from the bank. I also checked Swiss Francs and they were .90 to a dollar. So I do not have it backwards. So I thought I'd post it. And I was suggesting if one had euros one wouldn't have to use a credit card and be held hostage to the best rate. Some businesses hold a charge until they can get the higher rate.

And the rate changes daily and I have often found many businesses on the island tend to set their own rate for the conversion.

Morningstar online rate quotes - usually pretty accurate when I compare to credit card charges.

1.00 euro = 1.11 US dollar
Or
1.00 US dollar = .90 Euro


1.00 Swiss Franc - 1.01 US dollar
Or
1.00 US dollar = .99 Swiss Franc


When on the French side I always use my charge card and charges have never been held for a better rate.

It costs $1.11 ($1.107 USD) to buy a Euro

For one USD you get .90 Euro

It has been right around that rate for awhile give or take a cent or two

I should add that if you can get Euro for 99 cents (USD) at your bank go for it...and let me know which bank it is

Yep, just like car rentals, tipping/service charge and who has the best whatever, these things come around somewhat regularly.

Plus one to that!! If that banker is really giving that rate, they won't be employed as a banker for too long!!!!

reading all everyone has written then I'm glad I bought euros that day at the rate the bank gave me.

I would be curious to know how many dollars you spent and how many euros you got in return.

now that I read all this I wish I had gotten lots f them but alas just pocket money (couple of hundred) for arrival day in Amsterdam. Did it because i was informed some places will not take credit cards while others will not take cash, only Debit card and it must be on Maestro Debit which I have no idea where to get one. It's a division of Mastercard so I'll be checking online.

A Chip-and-Pin credit card may be needed in some places.

As well they should set their own rate. The actual legal tender in the French side is the euro. Businesses are, to some extent, doing you a favour by accepting any other currency. Addiionally the business does not get the rate that is posted. There is one rate to buy fx and another to sell it. Their banks charge them a service fee just like some credit cards charge a fee. The business shouldn't have to eat that cost for doiong you the favour of accepting your currency.

I'll stick with using my no fee credit card.
