It's been years since our last visit, but we usually try to visit St. John for a day when we visit the BVI. Is there no longer a ferry from West End to Cruz Bay? I can't seem to find any info on this. Thx!

That ferry has been out of service since Irma.

Best bet to do a water taxi? Or, because of customs, is this really not something that is easy to arrange? Thx!

No. I was just there. You have to go to Red Hook first to clear customs. I couldn't find a water taxi for two people for less than 500 bucks.

So is there any way to get to STJ from Tortola without going through STT?

Another thought - I have a captained charter. Can he drop us at STJ on the return day and check the boat back in for us - or do I have to be there?

I wanted to sort of "re-up" this question. We're going to have a mostly landbased trip on Tortola in March. We're wondering about the possibility of exploring St John either on a day trip or possibly for 2 days.

Is there an "easy" way to do this or is the answer to get a ferry from Sopers to Red Hook then Red Hook to Cruz Bay? Then same going back?

There is no easy way compared to pre-Irma. You have to clear customs in Red Hook or CA. RH is closer by far. Ferry to RH, clear and then ferry over to STJ. The STJ ferry runs on the hour. It’s sucks but it was a lot worse two years ago.

Is the boat BVI based or USVI based? All crew has to be together at time of check in. You can't just drop people off at various places in the USVI and then send only the captain to check in. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

There are 2 ferries that run from West End to Red Hook that I'm currently aware of. Then you could ferry Red Hook to Cruz Bay. There currently is no tortola to st john ferry.

native and son ferry
interisland boat services

do NOT trust their websites, call for current schedules. i called 2 weeks ago and times were different then posted.

also be sure to check all the silly miscellaneous fees, they add up quickly.

You are correct. Called my charter company and that's what I was told.

Thanks for the info and head's up about the schedules. I think this may be the only option. Even with 5 people, I don't know if a water taxi makes sense?

Consider renting a jeep and spending a couple of extra days on Tortola. We enjoyed smugglers cove– and dinner at Bananakeet.
