I'm afraid your right but it would be nice if they could be commercially harvested. I had Lionfish at a restaurant in St Maarten once and it was just awesome. Would love to have it again.

No. It is safe as long as it's cleaned properly and caught in deeper waters.

We had it at the Blue Fin in the old Starz casino before Irma. Was one of the best fish I've had on island. Haven't had it since.

There are certain areas in the Caribbean when a toxin, ciguatera, works it's way up the food chain including lionfish. Cooking does not destroy it but it does destroy the toxin in the lionfish spines. That being said, any bottom/reef fish taken from a known area should be suspect for ciguatera and generally locals avoid fishing there. I had a bout of it on St Barts many years ago, I was told it was a mild case but wouldn't want it again, mild or not. My little slice of paradise here on the east coast of FL has a lionfish roundup and local restaurants compete for the best recipe, delicious white, tender, flaky, much like red snapper.

Yes ciguatera is a problem eating bottom reef fish in shallower waters, that is why lion fish are caught commercially in deeper waters not affected by it.

Very strange. There was a comment (and I'm sorry, I missed from who) about there being a Lion Fish event in Florida (which is what I was commenting on). Maybe I'm not seeing it any more because I reported it?

Mote Marine in Sarasota,Fl has a spearfishing lionfish contest. Restaurants then serve the fish in various fashion. Happened a couple of weeks ago.
