Say that 3 times after a couple of painkillers. Does anyone have a ballpark figure what trip insurance runs for a week charter? I know there are many factors that affect the quote, just looking for an idea. I reside in Pennsylvania, will be on a Mooring's 514pc for a week October 18-27, charter cost roughly $9,700 and flight cost for both my wife and I came to $1,400. I know Mooring's has a plan thru them which I haven't investigated yet. I believe they write the policy through AIG. I called AIG directly and their lowest quote is $179 which isn't bad for basic flight, boat, weather and medical. They won't write a policy that just covers me as captain that includes the crew, there are 8 of us total. Each person or couple would have to get their own policies. I thought if I could be covered for the whole boat cost then if I couldn't go no one can but I'd be able to reimburse everyone. Didn't know if anyone bought Mooring's policy and it was more all inclusive?

As you say, there are a number of factors, but $179 is *very* cheap for $11,000 of coverage including medical. I would not expect much from that coverage. I would think more in the line of three to four times that for 8 people.

I got a policy for our group of 8 that was just under $800 total. I made sure that if a couple dropped out, that it would pay for their portion. My fear was we'd get a boat that required 4 couples to be able to afford it, someone dropped out, then the rest of us would be screwed. Sure enough, a couple had to drop out for medical reasons. I haven't been paid yet, but have the paperwork in. My trip happened a month ago.

I bought the policy through insuremytrip, which is a sponsor of this board.

Dayhiker - if you please report back here I’d be very interested in knowing how your claim proceeds - good luck.

For what it’s worth, I’m generally opposed to insuring my trips (land, sea, etc) as (1) the chances of trip issues for me are generally low (based upon my actual past experience), and (2) my limited experience with other “similar” policies in the past has been poor with loopholes, etc for insurers to avoid paying claims.

Again, best of luck with your claim and please do update when you have some resolution.

We thought the same thing and never bought trip ins. For some reason our whole crew did for our 2014 trip. I went into Afib a month before the trip. My husband is the captain so we had to cancel the boat and all. Everyone was paid in full and that was a relief. We used AIG on that trip. Now we would never book another sailing trip with our trip ins. Way too much money to waste!

The $179 was just for my wife and I not all 8 of us. I got all of the crew's money up front and told them there are no refunds for any reason as it would affect everyone else. I'm more concerned it I had to cancel then the trip would be off and I'd like to be able to reimburse in that situation. I'm more worried about flight problems or weather since it's still in hurricane season albeit towards the lower risk end of the season.

If someone drops out in Oct call me and I will go as long as you are a Steelers fan...:). I am well versed on captaining the 514

Moorings refunded all my money for 2 trips that I had paid for before Irma immediately without any insurance. I have only purchased insurance for the flights previously.

For my Feb 19 trip I had to detour a crew member to Peebles Hospital and 3 days there cost him 5k. I had looked into airlifting him to Miami which would have been very expensive and fortunately we didn't need it. One thing to check on if you work for a company if you have benefits that include travel assistance. As an example UNUM which provides long term disability also ties in a travel assist benefit which you need to notify the insurer of in advance of any medical evacuation

One of the reasons we use SJU as opposed to STT is the greater number of options to get back to the states and to EIS

Medical evac is EXTREMELY expensive, say at least $50,000.00. Stuff happens, regardless of how old or young you are. And if nothing else, everyone should have medical evac insurance, I think, as if you need it, you need it! And try to get a policy that provides PRIMARY insurance. What that means is that the insurance will pay UP FRONT, and you don't have to pay up front and wait (and hope!) for payment back from the insurance company. I don't know about you, but I would be hard pressed to come up with $50,000 overnight.

So far, I'm still waiting. I sent the medical information to them a month ago. Today I get an email requesting supporting medical documentation and proof of payment. They didn't define what they need for supporting medical documentation. I emailed them back. Considering their 3 week backlog, as I was previously told via phone, it'll be that long at a minimum before I get an answer. I'll call again anyway today.

Thus far, I don't recommend John Hancock for travel insurance. My trip was in late May 2019. Initiated the insurance claim in early May.

I called them since they don't respond to email. They want a statement from the physician stating that he couldn't attend the trip. I said that the full page he wrote explaining what all was wrong documented that but if all they needed was a single sentence saying, "In conclusion, because of the issues listed above, the patient was unable to attend the trip," then why the hell did they wait a month to ask for that single sentence? I'm not particularly happy with John Hancock travel insurance right now. The only bright light is that I hope that this means I will get a 100% reimbursement instead of the 75% you get on cancel for any reason. I did purchase cancel for any reason.
