Todays NY POST article on which Islands are safe to travel to and which are unsafe. St Maarten is listed as the safest level country to travel too.

Thanks for sharing. I'm not a big fan of the New York Post, but I agree that St. Maarten is relatively safe for tourists. As for the Dominican Republic, it appears that even Punta Cana is having some issues with recent events. Whenever traveling and spending time on a Caribbean Island (or anywhere else for that matter) it's smart to do a little research and determine the 'do's and don't's' of such destinations. On most of these islands a high percentage of the residents live below the poverty line, yet understand the importance of tourism to their islands. But, they'll always be a few that see tourism as an opportunity for crime.

Having only been to PHL to change planes we have never seen a bad part of Philly but took their advice.

I would disagree with Cuba assessment...it is super safe IMO on the resorts but that is probably because they are so remote and bad guys are severely punished. On our first trip in the 90's we met a 70 yr old lady who was a receptionist at Capital Records in Toronto. She had been visiting Cuba since the days when the army escorted tourists from the airport to the beaches at Varadero. She said she felt way safer at night than she did in DR or any Mexican resort.

Barbados, we always felt safe in travels all over the island.

Our honeymoon to Negril was the last time we will ever set foot in Jamaica. The beach hucksters stopped being fun on day 2.
