ok, I read everything here and other posts too but I am in need of a better example or explanation. Here is the scenario: sailboat charter is 15,000 for one week which includes a skipper who is said to cost $1000 for that week. It says that all other fees are extra like Yacht fuel, water and shore electricity and all of our food/liquor provisions. It also says that we need to feed him 3 meals per day. So we probably would tip him based on his fee of $1000....right? But second part of my question is we want to add on a chef to the mix. So it says this will cost $650 for the week + 3 meals/day and a bed and they will provide breakfasts, lunches and 2 dinners, organize food/liquor purchase and keep kitchen, saloon AND bathrooms clean and tidy. To me this is a no brainer of an add on but how much is the chef tip. Seams to me they would be providing a lot more service to the trip than 20% of 650. So let's say that the trip all goes great....skipper gets us everywhere we need go with us (we are the crew) helping where needed and the chef provides us with great meals and cleans up the public areas....we include them with all of our on land festivities (eating, drinking, dancing) and feed them there 3 squares/day. How much do we tip? Do we tip them separately or one lump that they divide? If it goes well we will want to do it again so we don't want to be cheap but we don't want to be way over tippers either.

Wow - You could rent a villa for a few weeks with that cost and still put in a couple of day sails.

Not sure about the BVI with a skipper and a cook...., since we get a 36 foot bare boat monohull, for TWO WEEKS, with all of the costs covered , for the boat and other fees for about $ 4000.00 for Two weeks.. Just two of us,
and we provide all of our own provisioning, but that is just breakfast, lunches, and snacks and booze. ( We spoil ourselves with late lunches or early dinnners ashore ). Since we are a sailing vessel and actually sail,
end of charter, two weeks total fuel used is about 7 gals. Fresh water for the boat in may, will vary as to marina , but it is incidental. We also pay our mooring or slip fees....that is not included. So, the skipered charter fees
required might be different from bare boat fees.

GREEK ISLANDS, skipper and cook...two weeks.

Now, we have only had a skipper and a cook, one time, and that was two weeks sailing the greek islands. We were charged the price of the charter and that included the provisioning for couples. Ashore, we paid for dinners, and could go
as a group or indiividually, We did not pay for the crew to eat and drink ashore.

Our vessel in Greece was a 60 foot monohull, with skipper, and the cook was a combo of cook, bartender and crew. As passengers, We tipped individual per couple, we were on board sailing for two weeks, and wanted to be part of the crew as
volunteers. We like sailing, so we stood helm watches, helped trim sails, helped with hauling up sailing and dousing sails, and med moor docking. All volunteer since that was our personal choice. Others sat on their okoles
and enjoyed being passengers. Everyone was spoiled to the hilt. Some had zero sailing experience, and did not lift a finger as to sailing the vessel, but we wanted to, and were qualified to do so. We had other qualified sailors as passengers'
who also participated at their leisure in the sailing of the vessel.

At the end of two weeks, or one week for the other passengers, We tipped the capt. $ 200.00, and the lady cook /, bartender / and crew person $ 200.00. They bloody well earned it. Others tipped per passenger couple as well.
Now , this was not the BVI, this was the Greek Islands. ( Most charters were one week, and we changed passengers one week out, as we had a couple of days on Santorini to party and explore and began our second week..

The crew had their own stateroom, in the stern, the passengers had individual state rooms below .

The OP, has not mentioned the ships complement, individual friends, sailing or seamanship knowledge, or couples, or all from the same family.

We also made up our own berths each morning, cleaned our own marine heads, and kept our personal gear stowed in lockers.

Perhaps , the tip that you give your skipper and cook needs to be a little higher for the additional duties that they are performing . .

We only have that one experience in greece with a hired skipper and cook. Wondering if the OP might contact the charter company office and ask them what their usual protocal is, as it might vary as to charter company. That
might be the best way, so everyone is totally happy after the one week of sailing the bvi and great and wonderful good times.

As a professional charter skipper, sailing and motor vessels, the tips would vary, but the larger vessels was usually $ 100.00 , but that was several years ago. I split that with my crew person or deck hand. These charters varied from
Christmas Parades in Newport Bay, to Three day Catalina Trips, to off shore day sails .

Yep, to keep life easy, give the charter company a call or an email, and they will kindly help you out, and you will not have to compute , and compute, and absolutely no stress.

You all are going to have a superbly fantastic BVI charter . Very special.
