This might be a silly question that I probably already know, but if you to bring stuff down to donate,do the airlines cut you a break on checked items?

No. And they would have no idea that's what you were doing with the items once you arrived anyway, as you couldn't prove it.

We did that last year and gave to lady who is a security guard at Porto Cupecoy because she also works at Red Cross. She just to.d us the need for clothes this year is not high.

I bagged up good clothes and went to our security office where maids sit waiting for rides over the hill. I carried the bags to the gate and opened them up and offered if they knew anyone who would want these good clothing items take what you want. Well it did not go as planned they were insulted and said we don't want your charity? I give up!

The Canadian airlines have permitted passengers to bring items to the island free of charge since the hurricane. I don't know the policy regarding that for the US airlines but they should do the same. Best to check with your airlines to be sure.
