Planning Catamaran sailing in May. We’re starting and returning out of Red Hook. Have to drop one of our crew a day early for flight out of EIS. Flight on Seabourne was just changed to 9:15AM departure.
Seeking advice as to where to spend night to drop crew off and not interrupt overall itinerary too much. Should we spend night in CGB and have crew member get an early taxi?
Realize Trellis would be easiest, but it doesn’t sound like the greatest anchor/overnight spot these days.
Any thoughts/advice is appreciated!!

There is no reason not to overnight in Trellis Bay other than that dinner ashore options are limited. The mooring field is clear and moorings seem fine. Ashore the market store is open with their casual attached eatery. Aragorn is open and in the process of adding a bit of a drinks and food facility.

Agree,Trellis would be great your guest can have a good breakfast at at Aragon’s and casually do a 5 minute walk to the airport

We have been sailing the BVI for 35 years.....this May will be sailing vacation # 17.
Were it us, we would definitely pick up a mooring at MARINA CAY, about 3/4 mile dinghy ride in calm waters to Trellis Bay. ( get there early mid day, and enjoy )
Why ?
I will stay positive , here , Marina Cay is a marvelous small island, with a clean beautiful beach, and clean clear water, well maintained moorings, few people,
friendly staff, feels good, and excellent meals at the new , one and only patio restaurant, under a shade cover, with wonderful sunsets and views of the other islands.
Also, they have a full service fuel dock, for fresh boat water and also fuel if you need any. And a very nice dinghy dock.
it will feel like your own little semi private tropical island, surrounded by a reef, but the anchorage is totally easy entry , Calm restful nights, . Marina Cay is a happy, feel good , experience. There is snorkeling on the reef around the island.
There is also a hill top view bar, as well, just a short walk up from the beach., Check on hours. But. but the beach side restaurant will be open Last trip, before Irma, we went up to the hill top bar for Happy Hour,
live music, and dancing , and meeting and talking story with other sailors. Then down to beach side for sunset dinner. No huge crowd, and open and friendly people.
Breakfast : We always fix an easy healthy breakfast on board, and do not know about breakfasts at Trellis. But, from Trellis Bay, they can walk over to the airport, and there is an Airport Coffee Shop, in the terminal at EIS , if breakfast is a priority. No worries.
Marina Cay, just feels very special, no large crowds, and has been making our hearts feel good for nearly four decades.
Trellis Bay, does not make us feel like that.
Again, that is our own personal feelings, others have their own ideas. .
Also there is a free FERRY, small one, that I call the DOCK BANGER... ,,runs between Trellis, Marina Cay, and the new and upscale really nice SCRUB ISLAND MARINA by Marriot. Free and very short rides.
Marina Cay is just about in the middle with 3/4 mile ferry or dink rides to Trellis or to Scrub. ( Don't let the word SCRUB have a negative effect on you ), Scrub Island Resort is FIVE STARS.
Strongly suggest that you order the CRUISING GUIDE TO THE VIRGIN ISLANDS. Both BVI and USVI. Best publication for planning and cruising the islands.
Just FYI, your crew, your boat, your choice.
P.S, Also very excellent snorkeling at Monkey Point, off Guana island. One of the absolute best, along with Pelican and Indians, just off Norman Island, Free NPS moorings , 1.5 hr max.
have a most fantastic sailing vacation. ( Camaneo Passage.....pay attention to the nav and chart )

1 nautical mile from Marina Cay mooring field to Trellis dock.
In good weather we find it no issue in the dinghy. In fresher winds prepare to get wet!
As convenient as mooring in Trellis is for the EIS pickup...our choice would always be Marina Cay.
As people have mentioned...you can always use the ferry if weather is marginal for dinghy.

I just noticed , you were also thinking about Cane Garden Bay.
Wow ! Beautiful tree lined long sandy beach. Moorings available. Our two faves for this next trip will be the old Myettes, that is now Pussers new bar and restaurant. ( looks like the locals are calling in " Puss'etts "
Also, after beaching it, we plan to have dinner at the ELM, And partying and dancing to the Elm Tones. We will have to check on the nights that the band is playing.
You could drop off your mooring at Marina Cay, and then sail thru the Camaneo Passage, to Monkey Point, tip of Guana Island , for excellent snorkeling, and then and along the back coast of Tortola to Cane Garden Bay.
Just some ideas, you will be charting your own course. it will all be good.

The 1/2 mile from Marina Cay is not calm unless the wind is dead calm. With any kind of wind its a wet trip. At night it can be dangerous as there are currents, wind and boats passing through the tight channel. A dinghy with a flashlight can easily be overlooked by go fast boats ripping through to JVD or CGB.

I picked up and dropped off at Trellis for EIS this week. I suggest mooring at Marina Cay and then in AM take boat over and pick up Mooring at Trellis and release dinghy there. Maybe the evening before you could do Scrub Island for dinner and sunset. I am not a fan of the dinghy trip across that channel unless dead calm. Marina Cay is not like it used to be but is still a nice mooring area.
if you do CGB make sure to check if Northern swell.

Appreciate the heads up on dinking from Marina Cay . You are correct in taking the boat over to Trellis, and then dinking ashore in the a.m, should be the plan.
Back a few years, I did see the small dock banger making the passage from Trellis, did not stop in Marina Cay on the way to SCRUB. This was repeating trips , before they began landing at Marina Cay. This was a much smaller
open boat, than the current ferry which is much larger..
Again, this was in may, and the waters were pretty calm. The OP's, trip would not have been at night since the flight is at 9:15 am. ..
But, safety at sea is paramount. Not to mention, the problems with the bare boat companies outboard motors. You all are right on.
However, not sure when the ferry returns from SCRUB to Marina Cay, in the early a.m. it the sked would work with , checking in, customs, breakfast, and the flight.
Agree with dropping off and taking the boat over, heave to, send the dink ashore, and then return to the boat and head back to marina cay or the next destination.

Tradewinds, aye aye. It is really blowing today, and the new floating dinghy dock at Trellis Bay Market was very squirrelly. Unloading people and bags onto it would have been wet and actually dangerous for someone with poor balance.
A much better alternative would have been taking the Scrub ferry, from Scrub or MC to the government dock. It is hourly in both directions, is not a “dock banger” (whatever that is), and uses stable docks at both ends.

Haven’t been in the area for a few years, I assumed Aragon would have worked together with Jeremy’s place like he used to do before Jeremy passed away.
Best bet would be to do Marina or Scrub Cay and motor over to Trellis in the morning a grab a mooring like others have mentioned.

At Marina Cay tonight. Lots of wind today. 25+. No bar at top of hill - gone. The Robb White house is now a gift shop. The restaurant was utterly destroyed. Now serving great food under a very nice tent near the dock, which is operating normally - fuel. Channel to Trellis today would be an extremely poor choice in a dinghy. No live music. BVI is still recovering and previous experience prior to storms is not reliable now. I am having a great time, but my two weeks on the boat is just about over. Encourage anybody who can to return. Expect the same great people, just not everything there was before. Dropping my son off at Trellis tomorrow morning. No problem.

Manpot, thought we might cross paths with you yesterday. Had late breakfast at Sebastian’s and enjoyed watching the surfers. Then had a nice, uncrowded drive along the coast. No cruise ships in Road Town the last two days, which makes such a difference!
