Thinking about checking out Grenada but finding it dang near impossible to travel to from Detroit without spending a night in Miami or somewhere, and even then it's well over a 24 hour venture. What's the secret to getting to the southern islands without spending 4 of 7 days en route?

When you find an easy way, let me know! We have been trying to return to Grenada for years but there is no easy way without spending a night somewhere and using Liat, plus the fares are outragious! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cloud.gif" alt="" />

Caribbean Air has a direct flight from JFK twice a week in the afternoon. You could try to book an early flight from Detroit to JFK, thats what Kim and I did last year only from Buffalo.

Drink all day at home, your friends worry about you; do it on vacation and they say "what a good time you're having". Save your friends needless worry, travel more!

That's a tough one, perhaps through NYC? I know Caribbean Airways has direct flights. Also check out www.redmangoapartmentstruebluegrenada.com

Drive to Toronto! They have direct flights to Barbadoes using several carriers and then you can hop SVGAir to any of the islands - same day!

We drive from near Toronto to Detroit to get cheaper flights elsewhere, takes about 3.5 hours.

Given the shakiness of LIAT iteneraries it seems prudent to schedule a 2-day trip down and back anyway.

Cutting things to a razor's edge on timing going down may lose you a day of cruising - sitting at the dock waiting for bags. My preference is to start the vacation out slow and casual with an extra day of buffer. Really adds to my relaxation factor.

Air Canada has direct flights to Grenada from Toronto and Air Transat (a Canadian Vacation Charter company)flies there now direct I believe. They may only have 1 flight a week though usually on a Saturday or Sunday as they are doing vacation charters there but you should be able to book a flight only if you don't want to book a hotel with them. They have some good air/hotels deals though if you are going to be land based.

Delta flies there until the end of March direct from JFK on selected days. I forgot the details, but in general, you would leave DTW on Friday and connect to the GND flight which leaves JFK a little afer midnight (Sat) and arrives GND around 7 am. Return is Sat about 7:30 pm arriving JFK about 11 pm. Since DET is a Delta hub, you might even have a convenient connecting flight back home that night.

I was afraid this was gonna be the case! I finally found the various JFK and Toronto flights after looking on OAG instead of just searching on the usual travel sites. These flights don't show up on the Travelocities et al at all, I'm guessing because Caribbean Air and the others don't make their inventories available to them.

Looks like a 10 day chunk is going to be the minimum time to allot. Darn. Guess there's a reason we keep ending up in the USVI or BVI. Kinda hard to compete with that convenience.

Can't imagine what your problem couldl be. We are going from Flint to Grenada next month using points. Of course it is not direct and will take all day but no overnights. We have had to do overnights on occasion when we leave booking until the last minute but still using points. Once we opted to spend a couple of days in South Beach, so that just extended the vacation. If you went thru Flint tho. you'd still overnight here, since the flight to Chicago leaves @ 6:00 AM. We used to go to different islands flying from Detroit and then we would usually overnight @ a Park & Stay Hotel. But that overnight thing is added expense and a pain in the neck unless you are staying somewhere warm and fun!

Checking ExpertFlyer.com, as someone above mentioned, there is a Wed and Sat flight on Caribbean Airways from JFK at 1:55. There should be a multitude of flights from DTW to JFK that will get you to JFK in plenty of time to take that 1:55 flight. Arrives in Grenada at 7:25, so it looks like only about an 8-9 hour travel time for you.

Use ITA Matrix. Shows almost all flights, and not affiliated with any travel site/airline.
