The two large Carrefours are closed just now. Just about everything else is open.

To expand on what Elaine said---Super U I think is the best grocery store open now. Hopefully the Carrefour by Mark's might be open by your trip, but not the one in Cole Bay. There are small Carrefours open at Porto Cupecoy, and by the medical school. Market Garden is there, as always, as well as Maho Market. After having their coolers inoperational for quite some time after Irma, the CostULess has finally reopened their fresh meat and food sections. What used to be the Fresh Market has reopened as another grocery store, can't ever remember the name. What used to be Sangs by the port has also reopened under another name. As far as I know, the supermarket that used to be by the bridge there in Sandy Ground is NOT open. I believe there is a another larger grocery store open now in Hope Estates. I have HEARD that what used to be Petit Casino in Orient Village is supposed to reopen as a Carrefour, but I don't know if that is correct, as otherwise there are no Carrefours open on the French side.

We are arriving next Saturday, the 20th, and are staying at Divi. What grocery store would be the best for us to get our groceries at for a couple of weeks. We used to use the Grand Marche over beside Marks Place, but I know they are now the Carrefour, and more than likely still closed due to the fire they experienced some months ago. We appreciate any suggestions.

Fairway Market or Sunny Foods. We went to Sunny on the Sunday after we arrived and were disappointed. In hindsight it seems like the whole island was grocery shopping that day. We went to Fairway a few days later and had a better experience.

As a side question, what bags are they using and do the charge for plastic? In past years we brought our own reusable bags.

Not sure about anyone else, but Super U definitely does NOT provide plastic bags. They do sell GREAT reusable bags for around 50 cents, that are 5 times as big as a regular plastic bag.

If you are staying at Divi, I would give Sunny Foods a try and also Cost Pro--we found both satisfied our needs and were reasonably close to Divi. We tried FairWay but thought the other two had fresher produce. This was during our trip in July, perhaps things have changed. Also, the store on site at Divi is very good in a pinch. They pack quite a lot into that tiny store! Enjoy your stay!

I would never take plastic....I'll hand carry things out of the store if I have to. But we don't....I always haver reusable shopping bags with us. Pack them in the outside zipper of our luggage and they are easily reachable for our "first shop" on the way to our place.
Still have some of the cool Grand Marche' LARGE bags with the cow on them. Funny.

... I have HEARD that what used to be Petit Casino in Orient Village is supposed to reopen as a Carrefour ... Based on the most recent pictures I have seen of the construction, the store in the village will retain its association with Casino. In the picture I saw, there was a new sign displaying "Le Petit Casino". Apparently it is supposed to reopen October 27.

The management at Carrefour stated that it is their intention to reopen the store on Bush road during the first week of November. Maybe you will get a chance to shop there if they get open.

Her name is Jeannie G (Gunthenan? ((Sp?)) or similar but she goes by Jeannie Gee for simplicity sake) and her business is Shopndropgrocerysxm.com. Such a great service for those of us who hate to shop........

When we stay at Divi we shop at Sunny Foods because of traffic it's the closest. Sunny's prices were less that the market next to Mark's Place. Used to prefer Fresh Market but I've heard that has closed. Has anything opened in its place?

Yes, I can't remember the name of it, but a new grocery store opened where Fresh Market was. They opened in June when we were on island. They literally opened I think the day we were there and there were NO prices on anything, so I have no idea what the prices were. They appeared to have lots of US products. This was a day or so after the Carrefour fire, so they rushed to get open when they weren't really ready, I think. There were a TON of locals in there that day, checking it out.

Thanks! I don't know if I have a mental block about these things, or if stores in SXM just seem to automatically pick names that sound like the names of other stores!! Elaine--have you shopped there?

No, have not been there. Honestly, when you say they have lots of American brands, it does not appeal. We're spoiled!
The one that was Sangs is called Fairway Mark It! Haven't been there either.

OK, I understand where you're coming from. A lot of tourists prefer American brands though. Sangs would be quite a ways from you, and if there are ships in, that area can get quite congested..

Market garden forconvenience and a good selection. Prices might be higher for some items and lower for others. Produce is usually pretty good too.

Depends on what you want. Carrefour is fine, and Super U if you want to make the trek.

I think most americans like market garden, and It does have that american flavor. For us??? Spending monthes on Island we found better to shop around and get much better prices We like sunny, but so go to other local small supermarkets. We have shopped many times at french super markets, where only french is spoken, but we still find what we want... I think if your there for a short time it really does not matter if you over pay, but for us? We shop around. Never go into market garden, saw there prices and left. but thats us.

Jeannie--yes, someone else said that. I was surprised when someone said that it was going to be a Carrefour. Glad to hear they are open.

The Carrefour near the University is superior to the one in Porto Cupecoy. Prices were good with a variety of foods fresh. Dairy, frozen, liquor tioletries. All shelves were well stocked. We bought a bag of frozen deshelled, cooked and clean shrimp for $11. They are 21/25. What products I saw that were the same at Mao Express, Carrefour was cheaper.

There is a video from Magic of the Caribbean on Facebook that takes you right inside the store. It pretty much looked the same inside to me. It didn't look to be any bigger.
