I just watched that video and am amazed at the difference in firefighting techniques between US and SXM. Does anyone know anything about their FD? Do they not have more than one engine and one truck company? Looks like they are understaffed and have a lack of equipment or am I too critical because of how US fire departments operate. I would have thought that there would have been another three or four engine companies and one or two more truck companies on scene before that 17 minute video ended.
It appears that the fire is out based on the fact that I now see on the sxm island cam that the traffic is again flowing in the circle. The building is still standing with damage to the area where the smoke was coming from.
I know what you mean. I was looking for a tall mechanism with lots of water coming out & more vehicles as well. Hope it's contained & not a major setback to the Carrefour. Really nice store! Loved it in January.
A "tall mechanism with lots of water coming out" is generally an indication that the firefighters have gone into defensive mode and have given up on saving the structure. Cutting the roof is standard practice to vent the horizontal heat and flames vertically and then advance a hose line into the building to extinguish the fire. My guess is there was not major damage however because it's a food store, the stock will have to be replaced, hello insurance company, just what they need!

Exactly. And I'm sure there's no power to the building any longer, so everything in the coolers, freezers, etc is going to be spoilage. Produce...gone.Wow....that's an insurance claim nightmare.
Two claims within a year? Premiums? lol
"It is good to do nothing all day, and then to rest"
We drove by on the way to dinner tonight, yellow tape up on the front entrance. And yes, regardless, I have to assume they will have to replace all food except canned stuff..
Looks like you'll be shopping at Market Garden for a while. It's a shame this had to happen to Carefour. Two hits in less than a year and the Cole Bay store out too.
Fairway Supermarket (formerly SANGS) is open and newly renovated. American products and well stocked. It is located near Philipsburg just head to Bobby's Marina it will be on your left with good parking.
Regardless, from what I am hearing, Carrefoure will be closed for around two months. Sad for them, with all they had to do to open after the hurricane. And no, no foul play probably. Suspected electrical problem in the office area.
