it has been announced that the airport on Virgin Gorda has been closed indefinitely. Another blow to Virgin Gorda. As usual no reason was given. So now everyone has to use the ferries. SAD!!

Actually. according to the BVIAA the fire truck is still operating but they expect it to die some time Saturday. (I kid you not!)

Maybe that’s when it will run out of gas! Actually the fire truck is the primary reason; they just figured out it was damaged in the hurricane. There are secondary reasons, but they are too secret to be revealed. Again, not joking.

Oh boy! So what do we do now? swim from SJU?  I'm assuming we will land at Beef and ferry over now? I really love that dirt airstrip and we get on island faster!!!

Not the first time they have closed it indefinitely. We were on island and were notified the day before we were scheduled to fly out that the airport had closed and we needed to ferry to Beef Island to make it to SJU. That was a runway safety issue allegedly. Although I seem to recall that it was closed for about a year then.

I had contacted flyBVI as I am arranging a party of 8 from all different parts of the country to come to Virgin Gorda next March. (Land trip). I thought the easiest way to alleviate flight issues was to charter from sju. They said this disruption could easily extend into next year given the pace and issues being experienced down there. Island Birds on the other hand said they thought (hoped?) only a few weeks. At any rate the very nice FlyBVI agent said to at least be aware a backup plan might be needed. It’s a lot of coordinating with this many people. So flying SJU to EIS ... Fairly similar? The ferry seems to run frequently enough I guess. Do you cab to the ferry? Just was loving the indulgence and ease of knowing we could all get there more efficiently. I certainly could have way worse problems I realize! If I opted for STT, what is the ballpark water taxi time and expense ?(tho one guest gets sea sick and may not love that after a long flight from seattle) But I’m curious. Any help would be appreciated

When we flew into EIS from SJU, we always walked to the ferry from the airport. Depending on the amount of luggage and wheeled or not, it is a 5 minute walk. Speedys runs several times a day from Beef Island to VG and I think the cost is $20 adult one way. Not sure on the water taxis from STT to VG, but we just came back from VG and took the Road Town Fast Ferry from STT to Road Town, cleared customs and then Speedys ferry from Road Town to VG. Speedys was running 3 days a week from STT to VG, Tue, Thurs and Saturday, but following Irma, they only run that on Saturday now, but by March, they may have their full schedule back up and running. For a time schedule, we left STT on the 8:30 ferry and arrived after it was all done in VG at noon I think.

Any help would be appreciated Given that Dohm's isn't operating, my info isn't of much uses but I'll share it anyway. Dohm's quoted me either $1,000 or $1,200 each way from STT/VG. In February, Sonic charged us $500 one way from STT to STJ so if they ran all the way to VG, it would likely be over $1,000 or higher.

Any help would be appreciated From St Thomas to VG, Speedy has a 4PM direct ferry on Saturday. It takes an hour and a half and used to cost around $50-60 per person a few years back. Some others on TTOL probably know the current cost. It used to run Tues, Thurs, and Sat. (before Irma). By next year, maybe they will be back to the 3 times a week schedule. Good Luck!
