Y'all this is the BEST cracker. It will bring beer drinking to a new level. A friend (who hails from Houma, Mississippi) gave us this recipe. It is crispy and spicy and has a taste that will make you crave these crackers. Great for a Super Bowl gathering. You can adjust the heat to your liking. I am not a fan of super hot food, but this is the bomb!

Hot Crackers

1 gallon jar with lid
1 box Zesta saltines (box that has 4 sleeves of crackers)
1 1/2 cups of a good extra virgin olive oil
1 pkg. dry ranch dressing
1 teasp. ground red pepper
1 teasp. ground black pepper
1 teasp. garlic powder
2 1/2 teasp. crushed red pepper

Wisk olive oil and all the spices together.
pack saltines in the gallon jar
Pour mixture of spices and olive oil over crackers.
This is where the fun begins. Roll the jar back and forth about 7 minutes. (my husband and I roll the jar on the floor back and forth between us). Once all the crackers seem to be coated and the olive oil is gone, let set for a few hours and bon apetit.

This jar of crackers will disappear immediately, they are addicting. You can add more heat if you like by adjusting the amount of hot pepper spices. enjoy

They don't get all mushy & disintegrate while you roll 'em around?

No, I thought the same thing. It is going to end up a big mushy mess. But, no they are crispy deliciousness. Hard to believe but true. The olive oil just enhances the flavor, plus it is good for you. Give it a try. The only bad thing for you in this recipe is the actual saltine cracker. Olive oil and spices are all heart healthy. My gastro Dr. said capsation (sp) in the hot peppers are good for your stomach. (who knew)!!! Enjoy

I'll definitely try it! The dry ranch mix tends to be very high in sodium- I wonder if there's a low-sodium version. If capsaicin is good for your stomach then we shouldn't ever have any GI issues, because we eat a ton of it!

I've been meaning to try my hand at making some whole-grain crackers, so if they come out good I'll try it with those, too!

Wow - way off on the spelling of capsaicin, thank goodness for phonics <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" /> That's what I get for not looking it up this morning. GI doc said people who eat alot of hot foods never have stomach problems. I am learning to like it, just in baby steps. Thus - the Hot Crackers. I know you will like them since you like hot foods.

These sound really good!
I have a couple of plastic jugs from chips/pretzels/cheese doodles, etc. that would work!
They have large lids and I wouldn't mind kicking them around the room with the fear of breaking!
I use the jugs for rice usually...
they will fit 5 pounds of rice easily, and better than the plastic bags the rice comes in for storing!
Lots of possibilities for flavorings in this recipe!
