Is the large grocery store right turn off new bridge open? Do they still have boxes there to put groceries in if you don't have bags. I hate to use up space packing with reusable grocery bags

3 or 4 months?? The last I knew, there was NOTHING happening there yet. I would think it would take a lot more than 3 or 4 months to re-open, once they start working on it..

The grocery in Cupecoy is open, yes, and is a smaller Carrefour. You also have the market in Maho, as well as the big former Grand Marche at the roundabout by Mark's, which is now a Carrefour. There is also the Market Garden, at the corner of Billy Folly Road.

By the way, with regard to grocery bags, I would bring some, as I'm not sure, but I think no one supplies them free anymore. A wad of grocery bags don't take up any room in suitcase.

Sadly, Carrefour STILL gives plastic bags. Carrefour at Porto Cupecoy is open and fully stocked most days.

Oh, OK, I thought I saw something in the paper that said that they had outlawed plastic bags on SXM. Sorry.

You have to pay for them though. (10 cents a bag)

Yup...cloth bags lying flat on the bottom of a suitcase take up negligible space. We always bring them...

I have two of the large old Grand Marche bags with the cows face on it! lol....They go right on the outside zipper area of our suitcases. Easy to pull out for that first-shop-stop...while one person watches the bags in the car, of course!

Cardboard boxes are a favorite hangout of cockroaches. Good luck using them. A couple of cloth or reusable bags take up almost no room.

We have a bag that we bought at Super U that I actually keep in my car now. Great, VERY sturdy bag! It has stuff in French all over it. Makes me feel like I'm on island! smile

Trouble with bags as that they tip over easily in the trunk of the car. Especially wine bottles. So we use the reusable 6 pack bags for wine and the open ones for groceries. We always pick up a box to keep in the truck to put the full bags in. Keeps them from tipping over and the bottles rolling around.

Just a FYI - when I stayed at Blue Marine in Maho, I found the market at Maho quite well stocked. It's small but I was able to find everything I needed.

It's closer to Phillipsburg where A.J.C Brouwer Rd. and Bush Rd. meet.

The Maho market is great for the basics upon arrival. It seemed to be a full service place just a bit smaller than Carrefour and a bit less $$. Then later try Super U in Marigot. Great selection low prices.

If you're talking about the Carrefour which used to be called the Grand Marche, by Mark's, it is MUCH larger than the Maho market. I don't particularly care for the Maho market, as the parking is so tight, and we do a LOT of cooking, so their selection isn't really what I would want. However, it is convenient to Beachside, so we do go there once a twice a week for quick stuff like the Daily Herald or a bottle of wine, although I find the prices at Maho market for wine to be very high, compared to Carrefour or Super U. I still very much miss the Gourmet Grand Marche which was in Simpson Bay.

Really that bad there Carol? I guess you are not close to Ft. Lauderdale as they are very familiar with French there. Many French Canadians spend the winter there.

Hi Carol, What part of Florida are you from, if you don't mind saying? We spent the month of Feb. in Okeechobee. We stayed in an RV resort that was absolutely beautiful & enjoyed it very much!

Yee Haw Junction? LOL

We spent 3 months in Port Saint Lucie. We went back and forth across the State a few times. Been on 60, 70 and Aligator Alley. Saw the sing for Yee Haw going across and up the Tpk. to Disney. And yes, we saw lots of groves.

Sometimes the middle of no where is kinda nice!

When I remember, I use my beach bag for groceries.
We also take bags from home, that we use again returning home, to
wrap shoes etc.

The new Carafour near Mark's place is AMAZING! The fresh produce, fish and meats made our mouths water just shopping in there. They have a ready made section that was beautiful as any Wholefoods or Roache Brothers in the Northeast. We went by the one in Cole Bay and it looked pretty bad still. The one in Coupe Coy was open and looked busy. The Market Garden just keeps getting better all the time. We went in there yesterday morning and the line was to the back of the store due to the Good Friday closings everywhere else.
Market Garden uses paper bags not plastic. I believe they were $.25 each. I brought along 1 grocery bag from the states and used that and my backpack most of the time.
