Good evening. I am looking at 7 day charter with dream yacht charters. Part of the quote is $180p/p for a cash box. What is that? The tip for the skipper and cook? Thanks.

I have not heard of it but sounds like I need to have one when we charter so I can use it for more rum!

It is combined mutual funds to cover mooring fees, food, drink, etc. So, everyone chips in to cover daily expenses so you don't have to go begging for money from your buddies.

We tell our crew that everyone kicks in $200 cash at the start of the charter. This is for moorings, ice, trash, whatever boat expenses come up. At the end, whatever is left over is put towards fuel, maybe some pre flight beers.

Gotcha. I suppose that makes sense!

It makes no sense at all. The charter company is quoting this as a cost to charter the boat. I have never heard of a company requiring cash up front to fund mooring balls.

George, maybe you are right. If it is a group of friends all chartering a boat, maybe each person/couple throws in X amount. But if I’m just booking a cabin with other strangers maybe it doesn’t make sense.

If you are just booking a cabin it definitly does make sense that the charter company quotes it. It avoids any misunderstanding whe you get aboard as a stranger and immediately told to contribute to the boat kitty.

On the quote it just says cash box $180p/p. It does not explain what it is for. I have reached out to DYC for further explanation.

Hey it could be the advanced tab for a true crewed charter.... ADVANCE PROVISIONING ALLOWANCE - A.P.A. most full service charters will send you an invoice well before the charter for a cash advance of 25-35% of the total charter cost to stock the bar and the galley stores. That shocks many first time crewed charterers. Any cash cost would come out of that advance payment as well. You should expect a full accounting from the captain at the end of the charter. Any excess funds should be returned; any shortfall covered in cash by the person who signed the charter agreement.

DYC confirmed with me that the cash box is used for mooring fees, docking fees and any cash incidentals.
