I own 2 weeks of timeshare at MM 75500 on Lower Matecumbe Key which was hit quite hard during the hurricane. I went down a couple of weeks ago for our annual owners meeting, which was held in Key Largo since most of Islamorada is still being repaired. I have been going to the Keys for at least 45 years, got married there 20 years ago, daughter was married there 23 years ago on the same dock. 2nd wife still lives there and her house survived. I was shocked at how bad the damage was, there is still debris on US1 in Key Largo although most of the businesses are up and running. I made it down to just past my place before I had enough and turned around. Most of the hotels are still closed including the "big ones" that should have withstood this storm. My place is looking at another year from now to reopen, what a mess. I was going to Key West in Feb for a special occasion but have changed my mind, the drive will be just too sad.

That makes me so sad to read that - we spent a few days at the Postcard Inn in Islamorada this past summer & really enjoyed it - I do not think Postcard Inn is open yet.

Gotta Caribbean soul I can barely control and some Texas hidden here in my heart...(J.B.)

Postcard is still closed and looks like it will be for some time. Other iconic hotels that are still closed are the Islander, Cheeca lodge, La Siesta, Amara Cay, both timeshares on Lower Matecumbe and more.

Cheeca Lodge is reopening March 30th! Pictures show it looking better than ever. We're staying there in late April. Also know that Drop Anchor has been open as well as most restaurants.

It is amazing what was damaged and what wasn't. Our place is having trouble getting workers due to the vast scope of the damage county wide. It will be a long time before all is back to normal, hope you enjoy your visit.

No question we will as all the places we love are up and running full tilt!

FYI, if you like Island Grill, under the Snake Creek bridge, they are now temporally in the old Bentlys/Busbys location until the old place is rebuilt.

Actually its Bumby's old place who moved up to Key Largo. Can't imagine Island Grill in a "fancy place" smile

Meant to comment on this as the "big ones" can't stand up to the storm surge that demolished the Atlantic side. Also not going down to the Keys doesn't help as they need our "tourists dollars". I'd encourage anyone thinking of going to the Keys or the BVI's to GO and spend money.

Thanks, for some reason I can't get the Bumby's name to stick in my head. It is now a tequila/taco place we were told. Island grill has a 1 year lease and will move back under the bridge when it is restored. You are spot on with spending some bucks down there, they really need it.

I want to call it "Brumby's". I looked at their Facebook page just now and you're right it is now a tequila/taco place. Too bad as we enjoyed their seafood/raw bar menu. Article on Island Grill said they'll rebuild the original place and maybe operate the new location under a different concept. Just so long as I can get my Tuna Nachos!!
