Not sure where to post for this. Is it safe to wander? Can you drink water in major resorts and town?
Wondering if closer to Bvi for safety or more like Jamaica or Mexico where you may not be wise to wander at large.... I like to wander.....

We live in Mexico 5 months of the year and quite a few of our friends and acquaintances travel up and down the coast. General consensus among that group: Honduras is a S**t hole. Just sharing what we were told. Hearsay and rumors aren't facts. "With one of the highest murder rates in the world and criminals operating with a high degree of impunity, U.S. citizens are reminded to remain alert at all times when traveling in Honduras." This replaces the Honduras Travel Warning dated August 5, 2016. U S Government Travel warning web page.

I have read that the State Dept. has also advised US travelers on visiting Cancun and Cabo San Lucas. There have been 12,000 murders in Mexico from Jan. to June 2017, mostly drug related. It's bad. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cloud.gif" alt="" />

Previous poster does own property in Mexico, so just do your own due diligence with regard to any destination.

Oh but Carol. I live here in Miami and I can attest to the fact that there is a lot of crime in Central America. We have tons of immigrants from CA here. i

I don't doubt there is lots of crime everywhere. My point was just that every destination wants to make themselves sound safer than other places..

Since Roatan is an out island I believe it does not have the crime of the mainland. Like everywhere, there have been issues. I did not have issues with the water.

Thanks. I was surprised to read the crime comments. Not sure if they knew I was talking about the out islands. I have read a lot of good and only this bad comment. thanks for the update about water. we want to scuba/snorkel and relax with no high end resorts, sort of like the BVI vibe I am looking for.......BVI several years ago that is.

If you want to dive, head over to Utila, that is a huge diving island.

Thanks, it does appear to Utilla a good spot. We may stay there actually.
