Just booked two seats for the wife and me on 9/17 - 9/24 out of MIA and great seats on American Airlines for $260 per person + taxes. Came i just under $380 a person round-trip. Fantastic. So excited. This is our 10th trip to St. Martin.

They should come down after 1st of year if another airline follows thru with flights (Spirit or Jet Blue?). Remember to check 2 one-way flights - often saves $40 or so.

These prices from Miami are lower than I have seen in YEARS. I do think it is related to the possibility (probability??) that SW and Jet Blue are coming. FINALLY some competition in Florida!! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Clapping.gif" alt="" />

Oh man! I am so jealous of you guys. We're shopping for tickets for our Christmas trip from DTW. Prices are outrageous.

AA is the least expensive though--hovering around $1000.00. I remember paying $400.00 in Nov 2004 on AA. Least we've ever paid.

Christmas flights are really tough, no matter where you fly from! As I said, this is by far the lowest prices we've seen for the Miami nonstop in years. I knew when AA and US Air merged, that prices would skyrocket, which they have. Hopefully there will again be some competition, if and when Southwest and Jet Blue start flying nonstop from Florida.

You refer to the flight as a non-stop. Where would AA stop going to sxm anyway.

I've had a flight that went from Miami to Puerto Rico to SXM. It was actually one of my favorite flights. We were on a tiny commuter and you could feel every move. Like I was flying a Cessna 172. Not really that small of a plane but I had fun.

There are other airports in FLORIDA that have connecting flights to SXM, either through Charlotte, Miami, Philadelphia, etc. Oh and by the way, I have seen some wacky flights from Miami, connecting to either Charlotte or Philly or NY, so that does happen. I was talking also about prices for flights from Florida in general, which have always been higher than from the Northeast. But for whatever reason, flights which CONNECT are almost always cheaper than a nonstop. For example this June, I had a connecting flight from Tampa through Charlotte on the way down, connecting through Miami on the way back, that was $410. I booked it because it was a pretty good fare, even though I prefer driving the 3.5 hours one way to Miami. When I booked that flight, all the nonstop flights from Miami were over $600, and that is what they have routinely have run recently.

Carol,

I can't speak for any other locations but my personal experience has been the non-stop flights out of JFK to St. Maarten are the cheapest, be they AA or JB. Not familiar with Delta so not sure about them. I once asked a reservation specialist why this was so and his best explanation (beyond "I'm really not a hundred percent certain.....") was that once you get into connecting from NY through different states and multiple airports there are extra taxes and airport usage fees involved whereby the direct flight only has one set of taxes.

Respectfully,

pat

You are so right! Gone are the days of flying into PR. and taking the American Eagle to ANY Caribbean island and being there before 3 o'clock. Boy do I miss those flights, never been the same.

Actually, that makes SENSE, but that's not what the pattern has been from Florida, at any rate... However, I checked today for our dates, and the prices from Tampa, connecting going to SXM, were more than the nonstop from Miami, which has not been the pattern at all from Florida in recent years. My GUESS at this point is that AA is discounting fares from Miami right now..
