We will be in the BVI's on a Mooring charter from the 1st to 10th July (our 6th trip) ...my 16 year old son has a cross country camp and must return early so we are considering letting him make the trip solo from Beef through San Juan to Orlando...first of all is this wise..he's a pretty seasoned traveler? Second... what is the best overnight spot for us to moor with best access to the airport?

Yes, I 2nd Trellis. You can dinghy in and walk to the airport with him and see him off. I don't think I'd have any problem sending a 16 year old off on their own like that. You'd just want to go over the steps with him - he'll have to go through customs..etc

Thanks for the replies, Trellis does seem like the best spot! Sometimes you just need some reassurance...My son I'm sure will be fine...we will consider it a rite of passage!! :)They (we have two) better get used to it, because we kinda like this place!

Make sure he knows he'll have to clear customs in SJU so allow plenty of time for that - he will then have to go back through security for his connecting flight -- if you're using Delta from SJU to MCO, there's a Delta rep right outside of Customs who grabs your bag - very convenient!

Yesterday the Delta rep also opened a locked door for me that put me right into the area where the ticket counters are. Saved me having to take the escalator down to the luggage area and then try to find my way back up to the security area. VERY convenient...

I have a 16 year old who has flown a number of times with several international legs. I have no doubt he could do it.
Most airlines have reps who help "shepard" minors.
My biggest concern is whether Customs (and TSA) would be concerned about international travel by unaccompanied minor.... Just verify.

I would recommend staying at Scrub Island and using their free ferry to go to Trellis.
