So, we have two sailboats sailing together for the first time in 10 years, my brother and I. I am chartering a Moorings 51.5. He a Sunsail 42, without A/C or electric winches. (He is younger than me.) Picked up a mooring at Marina Cay, but it is rolly. Thinking of other options. We don't know if Trellis has any anchorages available. If we leave our mooring, it may not be available if we need to come back. Radioed Scrub Island to see if they have any slips, but they acknowledged my call only once. Tried several times again, but no radio response.

If you drop the mooring and don't find another at Trellis Bay, plus don't wish to anchor then you have the option to head around Monkey Point on Guana and take a mooring at White Bay on Guana - those don't often fill up. Or if the rolling is due to a north swell then I'd head into the North Sound for a calmer anchorage or if you are at Guana Island already then continue to the shelter at Diamond Cay on Jost van Dyke.

Good idea. However, the crew, after only one day, has decided a rolly boat is easier than actually moving the boat again. They are tired. Plus, they know a couple of rum punches on the boat will ease any concerns they have about a rolly boat because they won't know if it the boat is rolling or if they are rolling.

We've had problems raising Scrub Island via VHF. I think they rely on handhelds, and the hill blocks the signal. When we were on our way there I couldn't get through to them until we rounded the corner and were staring at the marina.

Probably didn't help that the boat we were on had its VHF antenna attached to the stern rail, rather than at the top of the mast.

Yup... thats the same experience I've had. You basically have to be sitting right outside the marina before they answer. And yup... I've only seen them use the hand held units.

Life's short - sail more!
