I just booked our air to SXM for this fall, and booking the legs separately on AA instead of booking round trip saved $75/ticket. I've never encountered this before on a single airline. Saved additionally because they still allow a 24 hour hold on tickets, and the tickets went up overnight.

I've been searching for weeks for the perfect flights, i.e. no 6 hour layover in MIA, and finally settled for 2nd best each way. Except, the second best going is the best schedule, but a day earlier. We'll just have to live with an extra day on the island.

BTW, for you left coasters, the fare was $438 rt from SFO, so the planets have aligned for us this trip.

Same thing happened to me with American. Ended up being cheaper to book two one way tickets for September from Tampa through Miami.

That is a GREAT fare! I am struggling to find flights for July....everything is coming up over $800 from any of our 3 airports. NOT HAPPY! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/hammer.gif" alt="" />

I have booked two one-way trips ever since I started going to SXM because I use miles and those seats go fast. So I book outbound the day it becomes available; same for return, which is three weeks later. Having separate tickets also makes it easier for changing flights if something happens.

Congrats on the great fare!

A couple of days ago that was right around the price for a N/S R/T in January from BOS...I used miles (28k r/t) but the price was under $500 R/T...guess it does pay to grab 'em when they first come out

I have booked our 2018 return ,flight and am very happy with the deal. Now working on flight to get there.

If I look at American from Cincinnati the best deal is $450 through Charlotte. Arrive at 2:30. If I look at two individual flights on American through Miami it is $263. WTF? A bit of a layover but arrive 2 hours later. Why is this not found on Travelocity or AA ? Is there a danger of not being able to link the reservation?
Puzzled.

CLT to SXM (round trip) in November is $864 on American. We pay through the nose for our Charlotte hub. We can fly Delta through Atlanta for $80 less, but it takes about 4 more hours.

And sometimes you can be real lucky and catch a data entry mistake. We once found an AA Business flight to SXM posted at less than the Coach on the same flight the same day. We grabbed that one in a heartbeat and an hour or two later the error was corrected and the fare we found was GONE!

We've also seen a similar situation on recent posting of JB flights but sadly, we weren't planning on traveling on that particular date. A couple of hours later, almost a third of the MINT seats on that flight were sold out and the MINT fare was back to where I think it was always supposed to have been.

Accidents do happen and mistakes are made. It's nice when you can benefit from them at the airlines expense for a change! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

Yep, we have started booking our trip using one way. Big reason this year for 2018 was that our new miles hadn't been deposited into our account yet and the one way down was very cheap. We did use miles on the way back but had to book hubby and me separately as neither of us had enough to cover the whole thing. We do the credit cards to get the miles and they certainly have it all figured out. Flight attendant didn't like me questioning her about the zoning preference for AA card holders. I guess now we get Group 5 but some of our segments were 6- just like regular people. Nothing special. She had no answer and just moved on to the next victim. They promote free bags but it is only for domestic flights. 40,000 does not give you a free flight to SXM unless you want to have 2 stops and perhaps an overnight layover. Will ask more questions in April! LOL

Yup..."preferred boarding" is a step below "priority boarding"...kinda of a joke

Eligible cardmembers will board after Priority boarding is complete, but before the rest of economy boarding. The boarding benefit will display on your American Airlines boarding pass as Group 5.

Nothing like a monopoly to drive up and control airfares! We just remind ourselves how great living in the Carolinas is and then we forget about the airfare premium out of CLT. smile

It's very expensive to fly from Miami also. Things have gotten MUCH more expensive since US Air and AA merged. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Mad.gif" alt="" />

We have booked AA out of GSP (upstate SC) for October of this year to SXM. The cost was a little over $100 cheaper per ticket for the flights. The flight goes from GSP to Charlotte and catches the same direct flight that we would have driven to Charlotte and caught. Who knows how they determine prices. It was that way last year also.
