THe governement must really want the "free light bulbs" and magical new water source
In terms of scale - the proposed 326 room hotel would be about the same size as the current Sonesta Maho [sans Ocean Point]
If ... the 450 appartments are twice the size of a Sonesta Maho room, then an additional 3 Maho towers would be needed. So the scale is at least the equivalent of 4 times the Sonesta Maho. Where would that fit?
Just curious, who owns, controls the Mullet area?

I don't have the time right now, on the run! But the owners of Mullet have until (supposedly) 12/31/2017 to start construction. Plans have been in place for years. Rumor is if they don't start land goes to the government. Google "Mullet Bay Resort" and Attorney Scheppsi (spelling could be off and it's either in Ny or NJ) but it will give you background info

Unfortunately, there's plenty of land there for a development of that magnitude and there's always been 'talk' about relocating some of the golf course in that area to accommodate a new construction opportunity.
As a long-time devotee of this beach over all others on the island, I hope and pray it doesn't happen for the sake of all the visitors who love it there, but even moreso for the island families who have long made this their favorite beach.
But let's face it, IMHO, this wouldn't be the first time the island government has sold out the people they're supposed to be governing on behalf of and for.
Please say it isn't so....... <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" />

Well, selfishly, I'm glad it's not happening on the former Barbaron site as that's what I see from my deck at Divi. And since Mullett has never been a favorite beach of mine, I don't really have an opinion about that location but can understand the dismay of others.

Everyone has their particular "ox" that they are afraid of being gored. I have to say that I think that island visitors AND LOCAL RESIDENTS would be MUCH more affected by putting this piece of *#*@ at Mullet than at the other location. .. not that the local government officials give a care about either.

There are so many possibilities on Mullett property for this project. Where is it going to fit??? Don't forget, that property stretches from the ocean to the lagoon...on BOTH sides of the street...and then continues down in back of the Maho property. And...I am not sure, who owns the golf course....i believe it is part of that land...and what would stop them from ripping it up totally, and disbanding it, since it really does not get very much use anyway. I would hate to see a bunch more towers dotting the landscape along Mullett Bay,....but can realistically see a couple of Towers built on the water...and then a bunch of lower units...maybe five or six floor high, built behind closer to the lagoon. Also, down where the old Grand Casino was, could be retail....almost like it was back in the good old days prior to Luis' visit. I am praying though, that this does NOT come to fruition. but.....with all that vacant land...there are countless possibilities that could be done.....just hoping not!!!!

Very sad ..... <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Sad.gif" alt="" />
Definitely IMO the most beautiful beach in SXM. Also it seems it is the beach of preference for the residents....not good for them.

I shudder to think of the traffic it will cause.

The traffic I guess one could fix with an expanded road. The result of losing the last beach on the Dutch side which is open to anyone, is irreplaceable..

Between what is now going on at Maho/Sunset and possibly this, it will be a sad state of affairs for that area.

Expansion in Maho area perhaps, but please do not touch the Mullet Bay beach and the lagoon.
There is no place like SXM.

I thought that the road is a part of the old resort and not the property of the government. That could make it more interesting.

I wouldn't put much stock in that rumor. Mullet Bay is one of the most expensive pieces of land available in the Caribbean. If it is available at all. It's an ideal piece of property that has been viewed by billionaires. There is no way a China project can afford it if the project is even real in the first place. I would just chalk this up to the 2017 Mullet Bay rumor of the year. I think we are on version 20 at this point in time. Rob

As I said, everyone is afraid to see their particular ox being gored. But, as I said before, Mullet is the place that would most hurt locals AND visitors, if they take it away.

I have it on very good authority, Trump looked at Mullet a long time ago and nixed the possibility because of the HUGE price tag coupled with all the government corruption.
