Not on this topic but I can't seem to be able to start a new topic. We will be stocking up for week at grocery store on our way to Doves Nest. Any thoughts on comparison of Grand Marche to right over new bridge and I believe it is called the Simple Market in Marigot?
I moved this to create a new thread for you. JD

Simply market near grand case is closed. The supermarche in Marigot is very well stocked...the only problem i found was there are no American pruducts...but thats my personal choice...not really a negative reflection of the store. We found everything we needed there.

The Grand Marche to the right from the Causeway is technically called Carrefour. The market in Marigot is called Super U. The prices at Super U are very good, basically the lowest on island, but as Cathy said, the Super U has almost no American products. If you can read French, it is helpful there. To me, it's part of the fun, to not be able to read all the labels! The Carrefour has more American products, like potato chips and American brands.

Last year, we tried out the Simply Market in Marigot, and found we still needed to go to Super U to get what we needed. I recall they had a decent booze selection for simpler tastes, but that's about it.

Are you talking about the Simply in Sandy Ground? As I think that one has closed also, but not sure.

Probably. The store we went to was the only Simply left. I'm hardly surprised if it's now closed.

In Marigot the market is Super U and we found last week prices were less than Grande Marche or Carrefor.
Heading from Dove's nest toward Orient just past Hope Estate, is Leder Price. small but has most staple items. Bakery on same side near Hope Estate has great bread, pastries, sandwiches.
Or contact Jeannie at shopndrop.com to have the condo stocked for your arrival---at least basics then you can shop when your out and about.

I agree that Super U in Marigot has the best prices and has very large selections - mostly in French. (We accidentally bought some chicken flavored potato chips this last trip and they were actually quite tasty!) If you want a more American selection, you can go to the Maho Market by the roundabout - they've got a pretty good selection of things and the prices aren't bad (their liquor prices are excellent!). I haven't been to Carrefour yet so I can't comment but, as I recall from when it was the old store, it was a large store so I would imagine that it is well-stocked. I've read good things about their prices. Just be aware that there will be guys in there who bag your groceries and then request tips - made me uncomfortable when it was the old store.

I have no issue with giving a buck or two to the locals who choose to work for tips rather than experiment with other not so pleasant means of obtaining cash

"Just be aware that there will be guys in there who bag your groceries and then request tips - made me uncomfortable when it was the old store." I think it's great that the store allows them to do that. The box boys are always very polite and courteous and tips are the only reward they get for doing this as the market doesn't pay them. Would rather pay these then have an automatic tip added on to a restaurant bill when service was bad. Sometimes when we have a very large order I wish we could take him with us to help unload. LOL

Yes. If you are a long time visitor, it's where the Match used to be, in Howell Center. ...and right next to the McDonalds..

the big sign by the road says supermarche at howell center...and it is near mcdonalds...we did not take a picture but we went there twice last week. I was surprised it said supermarche...because i thought that's what they called it on the dutch side. the sign on the store may say super u...I dont recall.
The leader price near grand case next to the old simply has a very poor selection. We went there and left with nothing and went to marigot.
Everyone we know says the prices are best and the selection is better on the Dutch side....but we have never gone to the grocery store on the Dutch side.

Super U is as others have said in Howell Center. Coming from airport side Howell Center is on right just after atheletic complex (also at right.) After shopping when laving lot, turn right back onto main road and follow to Grand Case and Dove's Nest.
