Anyone happen to know why yesterdays flight (Apr 15th) departure was showered with water cannons?

At the airport we heard it was a tribute to a retiring pilot. Purely unconfirmed gossip..........

That's usually it. I was on a 747 return flight from Sydney to LAX where that occurred, very touching really. The captain got on the Intercom gave a speech and told stories before we landed. It was very funny, "sorry, but to you have to listen 'cuz I am the captain and I am retiring!!" Water cannons came out at landing and we had to stay seated while the crew placed balloons and streamers on the steps. It was neat to be there.
