We decided to expand our horizons and go to Antigua this June. We love SXM but are excited about the trip. Some thoughts on the differences and similarities would be great. Thanks!

It's been years but my best guess is that it's still waaaaay more formal and waaaay less relaxed than St. Maarten, and particularly so when comparing it to St. Martin. But that's just a guess.<img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

Respectfully,

Antigua is very British. Hubby kept forgetting to drive on the opposite side of the road. Locals stop mid road to chat with a friend they happen to see. And they do it for a long time. When we were there hotel staff told us to just sit and wait and to not blow horn or complain.

Hubby brought a jacket and wore it when we went outside our hotel to eat. Some men wore them some didn't.

Food was way more expensive than SXM. The town had little to offer. Better shopping in SXM. More yachts than in SXM. And the usual cruise ships. Expensive transportation. Cheaper to rent a car.

Be sure to tour the island it's beautiful. And stop at the "blow hole".

We enjoyed a two-week vacation to Antigua a few years ago with friends. Everyone we met was so friendly. Our taxi driver at the resort was remarkable. They even have a nude beach to visit for those who care to do so. I have posted a few stories on my blog about that trip you may care to read. Click on the link at the bottom of my post and when the link opens, click on the white box, top left, and type in Antigua. As you will see, GG, or taxi driver, was fantastic. You will enjoy your trip!

The beaches are nicer on Antigua. It's a lot more rural as well. Many of the hotels tend to be All Inclusive because it's a pain to drive around at night. Antigua is also quieter and more laid back than SXM. There's only 1 casino in St Johns. It attracts many cruiseships, yachters and sailors so in that respect it's similar to SXM. I would also say that there is more visible poverty as well although we did not feel unsafe. It does retain a certain British flavour and many of the tourists are Brits and Germans. English Harbour and Nelsons Dockyard are highlights of the island and there's a rich history. It's not as easy to see other islands but you could do day trips to Monserrat or Barbuda if you wanted.

We liked Antigua. Much quieter than SXM, especially away from St. Johns. Taxis are very expensive, most meals we found to be about the same price as SXM. Half Moon Bay beach is beautiful and nearly deserted when we were there. English Harbour is a lot of fun, had a great Christmas Day there with the yachties and the champagne party on Xmas day.

Also, make sure to go to Cambusa restaurant in Falmouth harbour - one of the best we've eaten at ever.
