We love the warbling trill sound of the tree frogs (at least I think that is what it is!!) at night. We've heard them on Oyster Bay hill a few times. We are thinking of staying in Orient Bay, maybe on the hill. Would we likely hear their song up there?

We've stayed in villas for years above Orient and I must say that we have never heard them. To be fair, we do run the air conditioner, but when returning from an evening meal or visiting with someone, we have never heard them. Have heard plenty of them on other islands, but never on SXM.

We have never heard them while staying in the Orient area, but have heard them every night in the Pelican area of Simpson Bay.

Fun story about tree frogs. I was just Skyping with my parents (they live in Colombier) about 15 minutes ago and the frogs were SO LOUD. So I said "my god, the tree frogs are so loud right now." and my mom and dad are like "what tree frogs?" They no longer hear them - it's just normal background noise to them. LOL

I could be mistaken but I'm thinking that tree frogs and peepers are two distinctly different creatures.

I love the chirping sounds of the peepers in the early evening hours here in Connecticut in the springtime but on the other hand, we used to get invaded by the tiny little tree frogs every year and they were horrible!

They were so very loud we could hear them indoors with the doors and windows closed and they'd actually drown out the volume on the television and make telephone conversations almost impossible.

They used to gather in the brackish water in our pool cover and they were horrible. And there was always one particular loud mouth in the bunch that seemed to be the ringleader. We even found them on our porch on occasion.

Thank heavens we got rid of that solid pool cover and got a mesh one instead. No more brackish water seems to equal no more tree frogs. But the peepers, which we love, are still there.... A sign that summer is almost here!! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Joy.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Joy.gif" alt="" />

Respectfully,

A local once told me that they aren't tree frogs but rather like a cricket - don't know if that's true but they definitely have a different sound than the tree frogs do in South Carolina. Regardless, when I hear that sound I know I'm in SXM.
