We will need to spend one night on STT following our sail charter in January. We're looking for a hotel that would let us walk to restaurants in the evening, and be close to shopping. Doesn't need to be on the ocean, but does need to be clean and safe. Any Suggestions?

Thanks
Tim

I do not think that it is particularly safe to walk in downtown STT after night. I like Crystal Palace, which would be close to shopping, and you could walk TO dinner several places, but I would catch a cab back, for just a few bucks. Lovely view of the harbor, Ronnie picks up and drops off at the airport and at the ferry dock.

Red Hook is safer, but you would need a short taxi ride

Is there any shopping in Red Hook?

I suggest you look into:

http://www.olgasfancy.com/

very close to Frenchtown restaurants -- walkable to downtown Main St Shopping - most stores close at 5pm! - 5 min. to airport by cab - 10 min. from Tortola ferry dock in Charlotte Amalie walking if you have 'light luggage'

Thanks for the suggestions

Olga's looks perfect but unfortunately isn't available for the night I need. I'll have a look at the Crystal Palace

I'm sorry, Evan. How is shopping in town "not safe"? For the record, there are a couple of stores, but more bars and restaurants in Red Hook. If one wants to shop, Havensight or downtown are the (very safe)areas to visit.

There are very few 'shops' in Red Hook and there is absolutely no comparison to the Downtown Charlotte Amalie or Havensight for actual shopping - and both town and Havensight have never been characterized as unsafe during the shopping times when stores are open - after dark the stores are closed and there is no reason to wander about beyond the few restaurants that are open in the evening hours.

Depending on your flight time consider staying on STJ instead. More of an "island" vibe and great restaurants in Cruz Bay within walking distance of the ferry. The ferry to Red Hook runs on the hour.

Thanks for all the suggestions

In the end we decided to stay in Road Town and ferry across the next day. It's what we've done in the past but thought maybe this time we'd check out CA.
