It'a shame the beach hasn't come back. Been gone for a long time.

Yes, it's a shame.

Do we blame that on the new Sunset Bar and Grill?

I wouldn't think so. Weather has to be the reason but this has been going on for a long time now. Hope it turns around.

It looks very nice and clean now BUT me think it lost its old sexappeal and the island spirit of the old place.

Agree. We went with friends in July and I was explaining what was just the original site.

I like the feel of the old Sunset. To corporate now in my opinion.Weather has been mentioned as the reason for the beach not coming back, what causes the beach to erode? Speaking of weather, after 4 years coming to SXM, (22 days in all)we have decided to skip a year and go to Destin Fl.In those 22 days we have had maybe 2 days where it was mostly sunny. The rest of the days mostly cloudy or rainy. Not good beach weather. By looking at the beach cam at the Sunset, it seems to be mostly cloudy a lot of days. We will miss the great restaurants and beaches next year, but we will be back at some point.

Sorry, are you saying you have spent 22 days on SXM and only had two sunny days? That seems pretty unusual to me.

That is exactly what I am saying! We love the island, our main activity is going to several of the beautiful beaches during our visit. Fun and sun, we just haven't had much sun! Maybe in 2018 we will have better luck, this past April at SXM was really bad, didn't even bother to take our usual day trip to Anguilla.

Wow! We were there in mid April to early May and I managed to come home with one of the best tans I've ever gotten and I didn't work too hard at it, either, considering there were days we didn't even make it to the beach. I truly wish you a better next time!

Is the original octagonal concrete bar even still there? And if so, do topless women still drink for free?

Yes on the first question. Second question, I think the answer is still yes.

I didn't see any need for improvement as our food has always been good.

And that was the main attraction of the "old" place.

So what is the process of the new complex, as in using the pool? Beach chairs? If you eat or drink there, are you able to use the pool and beach chairs for free? We were in SXM in 2010 and Sunset didn't have this before. Thank you.

If you're talking about The Refuge at Sunset, that is a pay situation, regardless. I think that perhaps you are staying at Alegria, according to your other note? Alegria has it's own pool, and chairs, which you can use for free. The pool and chairs at Sunset are totally separate, as Sunset is a separate entity. Those staying at Alegria get some kind of a discount at Sunset, like 25%, but nothing free. I honestly don't know whether they charge for the chairs there at Sunset on the beach or not, as we've never used those chairs. I'm pretty sure that they do not have service at the chairs on the beach, so I figure that it doesn't matter whether you eat or drink or not.

They charge for the chairs at sunset. Makes no difference if you eat or drink there.

Thanks Gary!!
Wow have things changed from the first time we went here when it was SSBB when Neil Rooney owned it!! But, my guess is that they want it to be a destination place for the "cruisers" !!! Looks great, not sure if it is "our" kind of place anymore??? Thanks for the post! 64days and a wake up!!!
