Wednesday, 01/09/02

Woke up to sunshine, again. Gourmet breakfast, again. Diane said it rained on me last night but she didn't want to close the hatch over my head because the breeze felt good. I slept like a rock, didn't feel a thing and I think she did close it though, my hair was dry when I woke up. The winds had picked up during the night, Jim seemed pleased about this as this is the day we head for Anegada. I asked him if he used GPS and he said "naw, not for this anyway." We passed Saba Rock at 9:40am and sighted Anegada in less than an hour. Passed through the large buoys on Anegada at 12:05pm.

We anchored in front of Neptune's Treasure. Jim and Katie had to make a couple of trys to get the anchor to hold. The color of the water approaching this island is simply amazing. As soon as we got anchored a very small seaplane does a circle around us and sets down about 150ft. behind us. The pilot brings the plane up alongside the boat behind us then he brings her up by us. Turns out he's selling twenty-minute rides for $125.00 a pop. The plane looks to be one step above an ultra light but is set up for three people. It said Wingcam Experimental on the side. The floats were made out of inflatable dinghy material. I was temped to give it a try but never did.

In the dinghy and off to The Anegada Reef for a taxi to Loblolly. We made dinner reservations for the six of us at the Anegada Reef Hotel, Katie gets a well deserved break tonight. The gift shop now has a computer with an internet connection, $5.00 for 15 minutes. I didn't get a chance to put up a post on TTOL, the taxi to Loblolly was waiting. Heidi is disappointed also, she's having some sort of computer withdrawl symptoms.

The taxi ride was interesting, this island is very different. Low, scrub brush, it has a rough and salty feel, hard to describe. It looks like the whole island would go under in a hurricane. Loblolly is a breathtakingly beautiful beach. On the right, far out on the reef, the breakers were pummeling a boat. All we could see was the hull, she was on her side. A British gal found a piece of teak washed up on the beach, it was the trim to go around some indicators, it had the holes cut in it for the dials. This island sure eats boats, we heard later she went on the reef the day before but no other details. The snorkeling here is excellent, we saw some of the largest reef fish that we'd seen so far and the coral was in top form. We saw a big pile of something on the sandy bottom it looked like poop made out of sand, it had us scratching our heads. After some consultation with Jim later we decided that's what it was, sea cucumber poop. We had drinks at the Big Bamboo. The taxi picks up on time and on arrival back at The Anegada Reef Hotel Heidi makes a beeline to the giftshop and her internet connection. She walks slowly back out with a horrible announcement, "The power went out, I feel so out of touch." At some point in the future she'll realize that that's the whole point. I call Tri-world and we're back on the boat for showers before dinner.

Heidi hurries everyone to get ready, our reservations are for 7:30 and the gift shop closes at 7:30. This is her last chance to go online. Jim comes up from below and says, "We can't get to shore. I've lost the keys to the dinghy" Heidi was "had" and we had a good laugh. She finally got online after waiting for two others ahead of her.

The seaplane pilot was at the Anegada Reef bar selling his excursions. A guy on the other side of the bar wanted his picture so the pilot struck a pose. I was right next to the pilot and mimicked his pose as the flash went off. No one noticed, at least until they get the film developed. Dinner was great; these folks do a nice job. When we get back to the boat the girls head for the cabins. Toby, Jim and I watch the stars, talk about comets and shooting stars. Jim has some more great story's. We crack a few jokes about the pilot offering 7:00am bloody mary specials and hit the sack.
