Lots of rocks were exposed on the beach when we were there this last May. Been watching the webcam every day since then and nothing has changed. Never seen it last this long without the sand returning.

We are here now. Small beach is forcing plane watchers into the roadway. Very dangerous!

I would agree. The dangerous situation at Maho is mostly a function of people who are not very bright, regardless of whether there is a big beach or a small one. If there are a couple of ships in (and often even if there's not), people stand in the street, they walk in the street, they walk down the concrete dividers in front and in between cars, usually having had several alcoholic drinks. It makes me very nervous to drive through there many times, because people apparently think they are invincible. It is quite surprising to me that someone has not gotten really badly hurt from being hit by a car there.

Was watching as AirFrance approached and lnded today. Showery day found puddles in road and people walking in streets. I'm sure a few drivers were quite upset. JetBlue takeoff had a blast of water hitting people near the fence. Absolutely ridiculous.

So does this mean that you don't go in the ocean? More people have died in the ocean on SXM than have been killed or hurt at the airport. How about skiing? How about mountain climbing? Hang gliding? Scuba diving? Football? Every one of those sports has more casualties than watching planes land and take off. People do things for the thrill of it. People don't do things that are boring.

Watching planes land and take off is one thing, knowingly walking/standing in traffic and impeding traffic flow is another. I would not walk in a heavy traffic area for the "thrill of it".

Agreed. I love watching the planes at Maho. But that does NOT involve standing in the middle of the road to do it.

As we were driving through that area back in April, people were trying to balance themselves atop the Jersey barriers in the middle of the road. We actually saw a guy (with a beer in hand....) slip off the barrier and into the side of a car that was slowly passing through ahead of us. Thank heavens the driver was going slow and watching the antics and most important, thank heavens the guy landed on his feet instead of falling under the car. I can only imagine how bad the driver would have felt had he hurt this person, through no apparent fault of his own.
Sorry, people do STUPID things here and based only on what I've seen, I'm thinking the combination of the 'thrill of it all' coupled with the alcoholic substances only exacerbates the problem.
Sorry, weeks, I meant to reply to ruralcarrier. My apologies.....

I agree about standing in the middle of the road to watch the planes. I don't go plane watch as much as I used to, when I do I stand on the beach side to watch planes land and on the narrow strip of grass to experience taking off. I think SXM made a big mistake by putting the second fence up because it makes the grassy area that much narrower. Anyway, I do agree that standing in the roadway is dangerous and inconsiderate of the drivers.

Pat.. No problem. And I agree about people drinking and balancing themselves on the concrete. I don't drink beer and only have wine or cocktails when I'm on a beach chair or with dinner.

Okay then, so the guy drinking the beer and standing on the barrier was a jerk and that's his right. As stated earlier, you just can't fix stupid....... My sympathy would have been with the guy driving the car and doing everything right.....can you just imagine how terrible he would have felt if the jerk had been hurt. My thought - would have served the jerk right if he did sustain some kind of a minor injury but all my sympathies would go to the driver.

This sure took a different turn. Was in Alaska out of internet and just got back. Original post was about all the rocks showing.

My complaint is that the webcam isn't coming up for me! Are other people seeing it?
