Looks like a second wave may be following this one later in the week.

The rain came down hard on Saturday night. Our cisterns on the East End of Jost are full, full, full! The lighting put on quite a show while the thunder rumbled overhead. By the time we left yesterday it was starting to clear and dry up.

Holy mother of all things good! Was anyone else out there on Sunday?!?

It was just me, my wife, and kids 10yr and 13yr on a 38. I was at Leverick Sunday morning (looked for you, Nick, but you were already gone until Tuesday). On and off squalls in the morning, I phoned The Moorings for a quick briefing as I wanted to get down to Norman that day. They said it'd be drizzly and windy the whole day but if I should be able to run down the channel. So off we went at around 11. At 12-12:30 or so, just off Beef Island, the world suddenly went crazy. Dark as night, sideways rain, steady winds in the 30-40kt range with higher gusts, and I could only see maybe two boatlenghts for at least 20 solid minutes, which felt like years. Lost GPS track as well. I had taken some bearings right before it hit so I'd know how to avoid land. But man-o-man, I have never been in such a spot. 15 minutes in, I got on the cell to the Moorings asking for an update trying to figure out how long I might be in that mess because as far as I could tell, it could have been hours. Their response, "oh, it's just some light drizzle, don't worry, it is usually just a minute or two".

I heard one of their boats was out at the same time and got hit by lightning.

Next time, I get my own weather briefing direct from reliable sources or I stay put. Lesson learned.

danmasi....glad we didn't meet!!! Although I did see another cat, maybe you, heading opposite direction. I was headed from CGB to NGS via Trellis on my 444, craziest time I've had since my Navy days! The 40+kts with the black out conditions got me a bit tight, but I was committed (and probably should have been!!) and figured trying to turn around was not worth the risk. My crew thought it was part of the adventure, and nobody puked which surprised me since some had earlier in the week. End of the day, all good and we got to Leverick where the captain had a couple stout ones. With all that said, there were boats with sails up...gotta bigger set than me. I'd checked the weather via VHF prior to leaving, and again when we stopped at Monkey Point, didn't sound like it was going to be as bad as it turned out to be.

We convinced two boats that where starting on Saturday afternoon to stay on our dock until Monday. Both where happy they did.

You know the old saying. Sailing is 2 hours of boredom and 10 minutes of sheer terror <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

We have learned the hard way to treat late July/ early August rain storms with great respect. Engine started, sails down. Other times of the year do not seem to be so bad, but after 2 very scary experiences we choose discretion any time we see clouds approaching. We have never sailed in late August or September, but I suspect we would do the same during these months as well.

For the record this is in a 40 foot monohull with two senior citizens sailing it. The lack of visibility as well as the extreme gusts are not for the faint of heart.

Wasn't us, we weren't on a cat this time, just 4 of us on a 38 mono. Noticed your No Shoes Nation flag- were you in a slip up at Scrub Tues or Weds? We brought the boat back to RT on Tuesday morning and spent a couple of nights drying out at the hotel on Scrub, saw a cat with that flag there.

Heh. No, excellent seamanship would have been to ignore my wife saying "it'll be ok, let's go", and staying put instead! smile

It was not that long ago where none of the better BVI boat operators would rent you a boat from early July until October at the earliest. Today the insurance rates have been jacked up to 2% of the insured value and the insurance markets are willing to take the risk at that rate to get the business. There are very strong historical reasons why none of the major Caribbean visitor events are scheduled after May 1st. Yes, the rates are less and the crowds are different but your trip can be washed out from any direction anytime after April 15th.
