St. Maarten first timer here, any suggestions for car rentals on the island? Should we rent before arriving or when we get to island? I just looked and its approx $385 for 10 days, intermediate (Elantra) May travel date.
Thank you

I pay 170 a week for a corolla from Hertz in May. All taxes fees and liability included. You'll find that is pretty close to what others charge to. The thing to look for is the bottom line quote that includes everything.

Book before you go. Prices tend to drop the closer you get to your arrival date. Generally, prices are lowest one to two months before you arrive. We have used Ace/Safari the past 5 or 6 years. Great price and service. Just keep checking prices. You can reserve online and if the price drops, just cancel existing reservation and then reserve at the lower price.

also, don't get too much car...i realize it depends on how many people/luggage you will be transporting, but because it's usually just 2 of us, we prefer to get smaller cars, usually an economy/compact hatchback, (what we call an "island car")...roads and parking can be tight in some places, and a small car can be beneficial <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Thumbsup.gif" alt="" />

As stated, it is really pretty simple. 1. Check Sponsors on this forum. 2. Get TOTAL cost quote to avoid surprises. 3. Periodically check to see if a better offer appears and change if appropriate. Since you are a first timer, a couple notes: Don't get upset when you are asked to sign credit card bill up front. It is a good idea to snap a couple photos of car before you leave rental lot when picking up the car. Check to make sure your cc covers Collision to enable you to decline Collision coverage. You will quickly learn that driving in SXM is an adventure.

We just got back from SXM and used Kennys Car rental, a sponsor of TTOL. Leslie was as wonderful to work with as everyone said he was.

Thank you That seems high for May. Prime time is Dec - April and that's when we go and rent for less $$. Check with the sponsors here at TTOL.

I've used Travel Car for a couple of years now. Small but good service. Rates for most companies vary by season.
