I've searched for this answer but again, wasn't coming up with anything, so will post. We will be on the boat for 10 days. Do you most of you pay cash for the mooring balls? Are we supposed to tip anyone when we pay for them? What experience lately have you all had with tipping in general there? Cash and I've never heard of tipping them. If somebody helped you docking that's a different matter....

FYI, we just traveled down for 10 nights. I took $4k in cash and we brought $2.5k home. We tipped on transfer days, in docks, and generally for good service - even in the customs office once. There is no need to tip for moorings. The reason we brought so much cash back was the comfort we had using our CC in most locations.

you tipped customs? That's a new one, most would consider tipping an officer a bribe.

That's really up to you...be sure to check if service has already been added though!

It has been awhile since I have visited this great board, but I recall someone used to say..."pack half the clothes and twice the cash" (or something to that degree).

I have found that is really good advice!

Re tipping in bars..be very careful about service already added..most bars don't..many restaurants do..neighbours added $30 to their big family $170 breakfast the other day at Sebastian's..amd had no idea 15% was already added ( it does say so on both bill and menu to be fair..but..I got really ripped ( I feel ) at Pirate's at The Bight..wont be back...

Two places that I know of where you could pay for the mooring fee by credit card: Cooper Island, where you can ask the person collecting the mooring fee to add it to your dinner tab, assuming you will be eating ashore at Cooper and at Soper's Hole where you can go into the marina office and pay for your mooring by credit card. Soper's will add $1.00 to cover cc fees.

At Cooper they add a service charge (whatever tax) on food and if you add that on to your meal you are in effect paying even more for the mooring. I didn't notice this until the next morning. I sure enjoy their happy hour.....

We just spent several nights at cooper and the mooring fee (and ice) that we added to the bill was excluded from the amount on which the service charge was calculated.
