I will definitely rent a car for your visit. Removes any kinks in the public transport system and makes the "Let's go here" thing MUCh easier....and....you will be amazed at wht you will stumble on when driving somewhere. No chnace of getting lost in a circular road plan....
It will make those spontaneous trips work...
