I would vote for your original plan. Cost is probably a wash by skipping ferry fees. A quick sail over to Christmas Cove or Caneel Bay and your vacation has started. Nothing fun about ferry rides and standing in line for customs in Road Town. We love a day or 2 along St John north shore bays and do it even if we start in the BVI.
