We do it all the time through the Skype app....
...install Skype if you do not already have it ...put your phone in airplane mode(should already be on this from your point of departure) ...turn on wifi ...open Skype and you are good to go
Average cost is 2-3 cents a minute to call most countries...cells are a bit higher but still less than 20 cents
We used it in France and SXm to call the USA and at home to call France..
No worries about any International plan and charges BUT you need a wifi signal. It won't work on the move...

I am on sprint, decide to get off my lazy butt, actually didn't really have to move, and call them. It is free. They said I can be anywhere in the world and on WiFi and its free to call anywhere. I'm not on any network. YEAH!

That works....I didn't know all international calls were free with ANY service
One question...since Sprint/Verizon etc. are cellular services how will you place the call on wifi while connected to Sprint? ...and...if you are NOT connected to Sprint (wifi only) them who completes the call? You need Skype or similar to go anywhere...and..it's not free...2.9 cents a min or so

If you can get a wi-fi connection that has decent bandwidth you should be golden. Most people don't understand this new feature but it is basically using your cellular phone to place VOIP calls. From Sprint.com ( http://support.sprint.com/support/a...ing/173e331f-8423-453e-93cb-4688f6a91f67) the calls will either be free if calling back to the USA or will be subject to their normal long distance roaming rates if to foreign numbers. Have a great trip!

Check out Talkatone. You get your own number which is synched to your contacts list. You can call from anywhere in the world (with a decent wifi connection) to any phone in the U.S. or Canada FREE!!! You get 10 free minutes a month and if you need more time you can buy 60 minutes for .99. When I say any phone in the U.S. or Canada I mean exactly that. Landline or cell phone. And people back in the U.S. can call you free as well. I also believe that you can call someone in another country if they also have Talkatone. Check it out. Oh and you can use your Talkatone number if you want to call someone normally but don't want the person you're calling to know your regular cell number.

Correct..I forgot that...but both parties have to have Skype open to complete the call...kind of a P.I.A...I just go all out and pay the 2.9 cents/minute and call any landline

Actually the receiver of the call doesn't have to be on Skype at the time as they will be notified as a call comes in. They just have to have Skype too.

Dansc said: I am on sprint, decide to get off my lazy butt, actually didn't really have to move, and call them. It is free. They said I can be anywhere in the world and on WiFi and its free to call anywhere. I'm not on any network. YEAH! that's pretty nice...AT&T also has WiFi calling if you have it enabled on your iphone, which i do...but AT&T treats WiFi calls practically the same as if you were using regular cell towers...so roaming and international long distance would still apply AT&T Wi-Fi Calling: Requires AT&T Wi-Fi Calling-capable smartphone with Internet connection via an existing Wi-Fi network. Once enabled, phone automatically makes and receives calls/text messages through Wi-Fi Calling only when AT&T network coverage is weak or unavailable. Charges: Domestic calls made/received within U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands have no additional charge and won’t count against plan usage limits. For international long distance calls, international rates under your existing rate plan or international package apply. All text messages sent/received are charged under your existing rate plan or international package and will count against usage limits. Service Limitations: Not available for use outside U.S., Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

So it would be the same as cellular calls but wifi when there is no cell coverage...rates are the same. ..and..this would nix the SXM thing... Service Limitations: Not available for use outside U.S., Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
