Obviously, a few years since I've been on the island. Is Ric's Place still there?
Thanks

Rick died a number of years ago, hence the closing.

They sold several years prior to Ric's passing and had eventually relocated to the states. They had been out of the restaurant for several years before Ric died.

They had actually started another venture on the island after selling the restaurant. The restaurant (Ric's Place) changed hands again and eventually became a BBQ-type place that was then ran into the ground.

Thanks for the information, everyone.
Sorry to hear about Rick. Best place to go to eat before our flight home. Good food, and we could see our car in the parking lot!

Ric wanted to slow things down so he sold to Tamara Rodriguez's mom and dad. Tragically, mom passed away soon after and Tam ran it for a while. She sold it to others and it became Bonita's Cantina, which went out of business about a year later. Ric and Kathy opened a mini golf course in Cole Bay which later became a Thai Restaurant, after Ric and Kathy returned to the US for medical reasons. No Americans or Canadians who live here ever stay when they have serious medical issues ... there is no facility that is equivalent to the best in North America, and most US health insurance covers nothing. (Check out SkyMed among TTOL sponsors.) Sadly, Ric passed away several years ago and was cremated. Kathy spread his ashes off Dawn Beach, one of his favorite places in the world.

There was a memorial service for Ric at the restaurant. Bonita's Cantina returned to Ric's Place for a night and a nice gathering of friends were on hand. I happened to be on the same flight as Kathy and Wendell and I attended the memorial service.

I remember going to Ric's Place when it was tucked away off Olde St., prior to them moving water-side on Front St. and later to Simpson Bay.

Along with out taxi driver friend, Ric and Kathy go back to our fist visit in 1991.

JD....do you remember what years Ric was waterside on Front Street?
That's where I remember being when John Denver died.

Actually, I posed this question to Ric back in 2010 and I still happen to have his email response. There was a discussion on TTOL about the place and some confusion as to dates and locations.

From Ric: "Yes, you remember well. We opened June 1, 1990 at the back of Olde Street Mall. We stayed there for three years and moved to the Front Street location during the weekend of May 7-10, 1993. Opened last place in Simpson Bay in early March of 2001."

We went in Ric's Place when we were on a cruise in Sept. 1991 and subsequently it became one of our "go to" places. I still stay in touch with Kathy to some degree. She is doing well and is in NC currently.

Nice you still have that message after so many years! Lots of changes in SXM since our first visit too.

Yes, lots of changes, some good and some not so good but all are out of our control.

The question about Ric's Place comes up on occasion so I thought it best to hold on to Ric's email.

Ran into Jerry the bar tender at Ric's Place in Mark's Place on two Saturday's in Sept and Oct. Always great chatting with him. Brings back many great memories. Here Kathie is doing well in No. Carolina.

Glad to hear Jerry is doing well. I have not seen him in several years. He was a SXM "fixture" as well. Perhaps I will see him in Mark's Place sometime.
