Just a quick question -- can you make reservations for Ferry from Charlotte Amalie to St. John? Just called one of the folks and they said they didn't take reservations - it is first come first served. Since we are taking that last ferry (flight arrives at 3:15 pm - ferry departs at 5:30 pm) I don't want to not have a seat. Thanks!

I haven't had a problem getting on the CA ferry and have never had a reservation for ferry or car barge in 30+ trips. Are you going during the July 4 St. John carnival? A bigger challenge has been the CA ferry not running at all. The dispatchers at the airport will know.

Something to consider is that the ferry ride from CA to St. John is longer and can be banging up wind in swells. There is no shelter from rain or sun at the CA ferry wharf. Its usually faster to take the Red Hook ferry on weekends when there is less after work traffic. Either way, you'll get there. If you REALLY want a reservation you can go with a water taxi.

Cheers, RickG

We always take a taxi to the Red Hook ferry. Like RickG, 30+ years never a problem. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif" alt="" />

The ferry from Charlotte Amalie to STJ is never so full that you would have to worry about getting a seat -- one of the reasons it has been canceled at times is lack of ridership.

If you arrive STT at 3:15 pm, then you should very likely be able to make the 5 PM ferry from Red Hook (it takes us 35 minutes from STT to Red Hook with no cruise ships in town, to up to an hour if the harbor is full of them). Either way, you'll be on St John before the 5:30 CA ferry has even left. Taxi fare to Red Hook is not that much more than to CA.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions and info -- we'll grab a cab to Red Hook and go from there!

Thanks!
