Jeff Berger's newsletter says that LaPlaya is open. Unless I didn't know where it was, it looked a LONG way from opening, as of the middle of June. Maybe part of the hotel is open but not the restaurant? No way the restaurant is open, unless we were totally in the wrong spot when we were looking??

Well, yes, that's what it says, but is the restaurant actually open? I don't see how it could be. Is there anyone on Orient can confirm that LaPlaya restaurant is open?

Carol, Linda (JazzGal) went the day they supposedly opened and was VERY unhappy. She ended up at Anse Marcel (like for the 3rd time already! lol)

It is not open! We went yesterday for the "grand opening" and there was nothing there, not even a food truck. Now they say next week. We will not be lining up!

Actually, I have been to Anse Marcel five times this trip. smile

Five of us did attempt to go for the July 1 "opening." We walked down the beach to where La Playa should have been, and there was construction fencing and definitely no beach chairs. We also drove in to the La Playa complex and did not see a food truck. AnnandSteve posted a picture of the fencing on Facebook. Bruno said the food truck would be opening to the right of the picture Ann posted, but it looks as though it won't actually be on the beach. There was a reception area, I assume for hotel check-in. There may be rooms open, but we didn't ask and couldn't tell from looking.

Bruno posted on Facebook that he plans to open no later than the end of next week.

Thanks for the info, everyone. What about working on the actual restaurant? As there definitely didn't seem to be any work even going on there, as of the middle of June.

Problems with photos. May post something when I get back home.

What do you use for photo storage/editing?

Problems with photos?? It is VERY easy to upload photos here to the SXM photo albums. I probably uploaded 50 pictures yesterday in a short period of time. You can then use the url to post the photos in a trip report.

For sure. Looking forward to visiting, just won't be first day! The walk in the sand to find out nothing there nearly killed me, and I only went half way! groovin

Bruno posted there first customers on July 4th. Not sure if that was the food truck or the restaurant. The restaurant was AMAZING to say the least. I pray he brings it back. So many of the staff went back to France.

The pool at the hotel looks really nice. I can see it from where we are currently staying in the village

I just booked at La Playa for the first time (4th time to SXM) for 10 days mid-January. We were a cruiser this past January and are excited to be on OB this winter!

Was looking into the rooms as I'm looking for something with a kitchen....but I'm not familiar with what a "hob" is?

Looks as if rooms at La Playa have an outdoor kitchenette....mini fridge and microwave. Is a hob a stove top?

BeachKitten--If it were ME, not sure a mini-fridge would be big enough for liquid supplies. grin Are we talking a dorm sized fridge?

We've made some friends who decided to extend their visit and needed to switch hotels, we recommended they check out La Playa, which is where they ended up staying. The rooms are really nicely done and the little kitchen is top notch. Really cool and efficient. The fridge is larger than dorm size. I will upload some pics.

Attached is the pic. Looks to be a decent sized fridge. Not full sized, but not bad.

I doubt it. Look like regular drawers to me.

The place we stayed in last had a similar fridge. The drawers were freezer drawers. The entire unit worked very well for our 4 week stay.

I'm 99.9% certain the drawers are not freezer drawers. Side note: the whole little Kitchenette area was hidden behind a collapsible set of doors. A very nice set up.

That refrigerator is similar to one found in a small travel trailer. Slightly bigger than a dorm fridge but still small in my books.
