When I log on to TTOL I get message it is NOT a secure site. Has this always been or is my new computer sensitive?

There was a lengthy discussion about this a few months ago.

Thank you. I was looking for the previous discussion and was unable to locate it.

It does not matter what you use TTOL is not a secure site and has always been that way. I asked previously about this as I was concerned.

So site isn't secure, meaning anyone can assess our info if they want.

Use the edit feature but you really don't have to worry about it for all practical purposes.

Makes no difference as it isn't a secure site to begin with.

I am just voicing my opinion on this matter and perhaps Eric or Carol will respond further but here goes.

One has to be a REGISTERED member of TTOL to even view a profile of a person. With RonDon I see listed as "writer" and "dining" as "occupation" and "hobbies". That is the only personal information I can see. They do have their state listed and that shows up along with 4 listings pertaining specifically to TTOL activity. If I log out of TTOL then I can not see anything other than read posts. I also see virtually the same thing in my own profile with the exception I have my birthday listed.

Only the registered member can access their OWN full profile and it is only seen by the same registered member.

Not sure what the big deal is but I can assure you there are other websites, search engines and social media sites (secure or not secure) that store credit card numbers and more very sensitive information and tracking of one's activity that I would be way more concerned about.

As long as no sensitive personal information is entered (and there would be no reason to enter credit card #'s, etc), there should not be anything to be concerned about.

What I find amazing is when someone is traveling and they are constantly posting their whereabouts on Facebook or other social media sites, basically telling anyone who follows them, are friends with them or someone with less than honorable intentions, they are away and their house and could be an easy target.

I have a neighbor who thinks everyone wants to know where she is eating, traveling to or otherwise away from the house, and this makes them a much easier target if someone would want to break into their house.

Rosemary,

Ruralcarrier has given you pretty good info. As long as you aren’t including a lot of personal information, and why would you do that in the first place, I wouldn’t worry about it if I were you.

Respectfully,

pat

Yup. This site has never been secure, nor does it really need to be. It only became obvious to people when Apple recently made a change to their Safari software to flag non-https sites as Not Secure. I'm more security conscious than most, and the fact that this site uses http instead of https doesn't bother me a bit. I'm not doing credit card transactions here, my ID is unique to this site, my password is unique to this site, and the email address which I registered with is where I send much of my non-secure email.

Yes it is popping up because of browser changes, never has been a https site. It is a public site so there is nothing to secure.

Regardless I have been able to make sure that the other software that goes along with TTOL software will not run in the "secure" mode. I have to make the changes on the server and then a bunch of modifications elsewhere so it will happen sometime in July.

The end result will be the same that you have now and the same information that is publicly available will still be publicly available, just you will not see the nag screen.

I assume the conversion is still in process. The site is now working as https, but does still flag as insecure by the browser, probably just due to the fact that the links for some images and links for ads are to http. I imagine you'll want to fix that pretty soon, since my browser is blocking the ads as a mixed content error. And there should be a redirect from the http to the https address.

Don't know why all of those links are absolute URL's. <img src="http://traveltalkonline.com/ttol/logo.gif" width=86 height=60 alt="" border="0" /> could just be <img src="/ttol/logo.gif" width=86 height=60 alt="" border="0" />, which is more general and works for both http and https.

At least now the password is not send insecure if you use the https site.

Thanks for the info. I started to wonder when Bigbob posted that when he went to a sponsor's site advertised here he got chinese or japaneese characters that he couldn't read instead of the sponsor.

That situation has NOTHING to do with us. Bruno's website got hacked. He just happens to be a sponsor, has been for many years. I assume that he will get a new website up soon.
