The high rise building across the road from Porto Cupecoy being proposed to start building in January 2017. I saw this on the web this morning.

Oh, ok, thanks... I'm confused, where is the Blue Mall in that 'picture'? That building sure looks tall. I basically loathe the Cupecoy area anyway. It might as well be Las Vegas, with all those huge buildings.

How would you like to own at Shore Point with this behind your property?

This past winter I seem to remember a construction type trailer? and a sign for a development set up southeast of the Cupecoy roundabout on the ocean side of the road.

Is this the same thing?

OK, thanks. I guess it's just the angle that threw me off.. And yes, benni, it looks totally out of place. I can't imagine what kind of a shadow that will throw over Shore Pointe..

Didn't I read the building at Belair, The China Project, will be higher by a couple of floors?

Not too dis-similar from The Towers right down the street, considered by many to be the premier resort on the whole island.

I thought Blue Mall was out of scale for SXM... Well, I guess I was wrong. I can just picture future trafic in Cupecoy and lowland area. Relaxing it is not

There is no place like SXM.

Towers is only 8 floors.

This behemoth appears 14 or more.

How many is Sapphire?

By eye balling it, I would say 15 floors, if the depiction is correct.

This looks like the apartment building that is supposed to be going up opposite Sapphire. It's to be constructed by the same folks who built all the apts on Jordan Road.

I seriously doubt the "Towers" they're referencing is our Towers, Leona. Much as I love my timeshare there, I'd be hard pressed to consider it the 'premier' resort on the island. It definitely was - once upon a time - but that was a long, long time ago, pre '95 at least. I'm just guessing but thinking the 'towers' the other poster is refering to are the tower-like buildings - The Cliffs, Sapphire and Rainbow along with the Blue Mall - along the main road through Cupecoy. Most don't even know where our Towers is, set back by itself off the main road the way it is. And truthfully, much as I hate to see the island go this route, if they MUST build these behemoths, I just wish they'd tuck them away out of sight much as they did with our place as opposed to along the sea coast the way they are doing and blocking the view everyone came for in the first place.

We are sitting on our balcony at the Waikiki Beach Marriott and even as pretty as this stretch of Waikiki is, I can't help but think how Miami Beach-like it is and how much more beautiful the open beach areas are by comparison. But that's just my opinion......and we all know about opinions, right?

And while I disagree with the present day comparison of that area to Las Vegas, if they keep it up it may become that way. Doesn't the STARZ property have some kind of plans to build their own mega-story resort at some point?

I wasn't sure who they were referring to either. I think that perhaps they were referring to the Cliff..

We stayed at the Cupecoy Beach Club and The Cliff literally towered over one end, I wouldn't be happy if I owned on that side of the complex.

They're ultimately going to lose tourists, not gain them, if they keep going this route. An island paradise is why many people come to Caribbean islands in the first place. If I wanted to see high rises along a beach I'd stay here in Massachusetts and go to Revere Beach once city away from me. Yes, right now I'm exaggerating, but in 15 or 20 years, we'll see.

David you're not exaggerating at all. It's already happened--don't have to wait 15 years. When we 1st went to this island it was quiet, calm, very few cars. People smiled, said hello. We even offered rides to locals walking to work. Wouldn't do that now.

Simpson Bay was a bunch of small dwellings. One hotel in Maho then nothing until you reached the condos at the golf course.

P'Burg was booming with restaurants and stores and no one was afraid to walk there at night.

Dawn Beach was a pristine paradise beach with great snorkeling then The Westin Hotel destroyed it all. First by dumping waste then by attempting to block off the beach. It's still a problem to park there and the beach isn't worth it anymore.

Now with the high-rise at Porto Cupecoy and the one scheduled for Little Bay Beach near Belair, it's only a matter of time paradise will be gone.

No, from the mock-up, this building is not opposite Sapphire. This is down behind Shore Pointe, and opposite of Porto Cupecoy.

Funny you should mention Revere Beach....was away from it for so many years....went through last year and was shocked to see what has happened to Revere with all the new high rise condos and apartments. I grew up on that beach, in fact, met my wife at Punk's Corner. I so remember all the different rides and roller coasters, the food places....and the millions of people on the beach during a hot summer day...Now...just one high rise after the other. At least Kelly's, Anna's and Bianchi's are still there? smile

We have been going to SXM for over 20 years and it seems like their has always been something going on or happening that some people say will keep tourist from go back. To much crime, to much new construction, Zika scare ,etc. Sure some don't go back but then a lot lot more discover the Island and love it. These investors / developers are spending 100's of millions because they know SXM is still a paradise to most and will be for a long long time. I don't like a lot of it either, that's just how it is. But A lot is good and I am excited for the Island and its future. IMO

I don't like what they have done to the Cupecoy area with the Blue Mall and now this totally ridiculous structure they want to construct. Porto Cupecoy which has a lot going for it didn't sell out as planned and big discounts were offered to buyers and finally Atlantis Casino bought the remaining unsold units a few years ago. Does this developer think this will be an easy sale? I doubt it.

I didn't grow up on Revere Beach but very close to it in a small town that has it's own beach. You have brought back some really cool memories for me because as soon as our group could drive that's where we went along with Nahant Beach. OH! for some clams and roast beef sandwiches from Kelly's. And yes the rides were awesome.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread but I just couldn't help myself!

I'm 51, and grew up in the late 70's and 1980's, when Revere Beach Blvd was very rundown, and the beach sand itself was a bit dirty. Now it's pristine, and the boulevard is spotless as well. They really cleaned up the area nicely, but it certainly doesn't have that fun honky-tonk vibe of years past. The whole area is gentrified. I'm actually from Everett, one city away from Revere, and reside in Chelsea, MA, which is also getting quite gentrified.

Kelly's has a location on Route 1 in Saugus, now, by the way. And The Hilltop Steakhouse closed and the building was razed just a couple of years ago.

The poster has knowledge of Revere and what has happened to it. He was making a good comparison of what happens to an area with similar construction. That's what it has to do with it.

Unfortunately you don't know Revere. I bet there's someplace near you that has gone the same way.
