Will be in SXM in two weeks and wondered if Colin and Danny are still there setting up chairs and umbrellas. Also, is George the Sand Sculptor still on the beach?

Sorry, south of Pedro's, is that toward Club O, or away? I am horrible with directions. You know about the construction project from just past Pedro's to Kontiki, right?

Just to clarify, George has not been doing sculptures for quite some time and his latest gig was working for Cheryl at Cheryl and Andy's. I want to say he has been there for 3 years but the years blend together for me.

As far as I know, George stopped doing serious sand sculptures on the beach between Club O and Pedros in the fall of 2009 - he got very discouraged because people would take pictures of all kinds and leave nothing in his tip bowl - whether he was there or not. Also, people would just deliberately walk all over his sculptures just for the heck of it - maliciously destroying some of his large works, like the Simpsons and the Last Supper - if you saw some of his really big sculptures. He continued doing some private contracted work for people - birthday parties and things - I do not know if he still is getting any of those jobs or if he still wants them. If you see him, tell him how much you enjoyed the sculptures - I think he will appreciate it.

Since he was working at Andy and Cheryl's and they are closed now, he might not be around at all right now.

That is what he told us as well, that people thought his work was a "public service". At that time I thought that he was sleeping at the old Safari Grill (now Antoin's) but to ask him he was well off...very interesting and complex man. I would be shocked if he is not around somewhere...making do.

George is from Jamaica. He told us several years ago, when he already was working for Andy and Cheryl, that he had learned sand sculpting from his dad.

He may have been from Jamaica originally, but he had a thick cockney accent from living in London most of his life. I remember him telling me that he was basically a 'performance artist' and there wasn't much money in it. But his needs were basically minimal, although he did have a car at one point. About five years ago, when I met him for the first time, he said he intended to stay in SXM for one more year. So, I was mildly surprised to see him again each of the intervening years.
