Daily Herald story As Pat said in one of her reports, the former Atlantis Casino was re-launched the other night as Starz. This story also mentions a new hotel somewhere in the area.

Construction on the hotel is to start in September. Will have to see if that actually happens.

It looked like the hotel could be the old Tradewinds, right above the casino. There were huge signs on it. We stayed there many years ago.

Isn't there a half empty commercial center just yards away from the casino?

Uh, the Blue Mall? The same one that didn't sell out as a commercial venture and still hasn't sold out now that they're selling it as condos? Yeah! They really need more mega hotels in that area. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/duh.gif" alt="" />

From another news paper:

"He said the company managed to purchase the land next door where they intend to construct a hotel, construction he said is scheduled to begin in September 2015."

That is probably the old TradeWinds.

There was a mock-up of this at the old Atlantis a few years ago. It was supposed to me a major tall hotel! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

The old Tradewinds is now all individually owned condos. The new Hotel is more like the property at the end of the parking lot...the old apt complex which has been vacant for years now.

I thought the Tradewinds was condos now, as someone mentioned renting there recently.

The Tradewinds also use to be a hotel above the casino area. We stayed there several times, when we first started going to SXM. They also had and have the condo section. I always wondered why they had the same name. I just figured they were part of the same complex.
When we were there, a couple of weeks ago, they had huge Starz signs on the empty buildings. We thought maybe they were rebuilding them...I think we are thinking of the same buildings. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

At some point, and I'm thinking it was before that, wasn't it the Treasure Island Resort and Casino? I remember staying there a few times in the late 80s and wasn't there was a stairway/walkway that took you past a pool up there and down into the parking lot and the casino and shop area. Are we in the same area? <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

If they remove the abandoned buildings above the parking lot things will be improved. If they take customers away from the potential hotel at Alegria, Mr Corallo will be pleased.

Pat, you are right it was called Treasure Island!!!!!. Can't remember my name anymore....but I knew it was that spot on the hill behind the casino. There was a swimming pool in between, and some shops closer to the casino.
I remember (on one trip) sitting at that pool, after our flight was cancelled, due to an ice storm on the east coast. We stayed an extra 3 days.
I wonder if we were there at the same time.

We climbed those stairs so many late nights, after being in the casino, and we were never nervous about crime.
There was a place that made the best crepes, and it was gone on the next trip. A little store on the road above it that we use to get breakfast--so much is coming back...

I wish I had your memory!!!! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

I think this is the old Tradewinds and I also think that the land between including the Tradewinds might be the site of the new hotel. Just speculating.... Or it is Treasure Island. Corrections below....

A little bit of history. My wife and I have been owners at what was called Tradewinds I, now known as Tradewinds @ Cupecoy.

Our first trip to the island was 1976.

Treasure Island originally consisted of four properties:

1) The property that is now known now as Cupecoy Beach Club).
2) The site where Starz Casino is located is where the lobby was located for the Treasure Island Hotel, and its Casino.
3) The red roof buildings, up the road from the casino was known as Tradewinds I.
4) The building on the hill behind the casino, was designed and built as 2 & 3 bedroom condos. Only 10 to 12 units were sold to owners, who as far as we know, still have deeds to their properties. This building was severely damaged by hurricane Luis, in 1995.

Because the owners had deeds to their units is the reason, that the "owners" of the complex have not been able to do anything with the building.

Treasure Island was forced to close down in 1990 due to several million dollars owed to GEBE for utilities. The entire property was eventually sold to the current owners.

Another memory refreshed--the breakfast place upstairs!! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

I thought the hurricane closed TI, and then I heard people were living in the abandoned units.

We stayed at Treasure Island and Cupocoy Beach Club, across the street, several times.
We also stayed at The Summit many times.
I think that is why we prefer Mullet Bay Beach to the others.
We use to walk from Treasure Island and Cupocoy Beach Club to Mullet.
