Just read a post on BVI community board about someone in Trellis bay boarding a cat wearing back hoodie. One of the crew had stayed aboard while the rest went ashore for dinner. The crew member surprised the ------ and he left on a kayak (red in color). Crazy people everywhere ... even in Paradise I guess. For those who might be interested, I use the NGA (National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency) app on my iPhone ... it's the Anti-Shipping Activity Message (ASAM) app ... link to press release HERE. I read that too. I imagine the boat must have looked empty. Always good to make it look like someone is home. It would be nice if were didn't have to worry about it though .

Having been Boarded and Shot at last year here, I can tell you things have changed here in the BVI. It is now prudent to remain well lit, lock your dinghy, keep a high powered flashlight and air horn at arms length. If you leave your boat, lock it up, including the hatches. Sad but true.

It's a real bummer, and your lucky he was a bad shot.
Usually in small populated islands it's one group of people who cause most of the crimes.
If the Police would get on it regardless if they're related to the persons involved it would end it pronto.
If it keeps up it will definitely affect the charter companies.
The government has to remember they aren't the only destination especially since Cuba might open up to US citizens.

We have not been back in a while after several great charters out of St. Vincent, St. Lucia, and Martinique. But a few years ago just a couple of incidents happened in anchorages on St. Vincent. The cruising community stopped using any of the anchorages on St. Vincent. The folks on boats just spent their days and nights on the many other islands. The same could happen to any island in the BVI/VI. It happened to the entire island of St. Croix a very long time ago.

Speaking on past experience, we have been in the BVI 3 times a year the past few years and have never had ANY problems, my take is it's not a major issue, just one problem with one thief.

I've never had a problem in St Vincent but I've heard of a few, although while in Canouan having drinks and dinner at the Tamarind hotel someone boarded my boat and stole a few things.

I will add that we do lock our boat when ever we're ashore.

We woke up after Foxy's Halloween party to find that all of our beer was stolen off the boat that night while at the party. We were moored in White bay. Turns out it wasn't stolen we just drank it&#128563;....
Had a good laugh, but actually this sucks if these thing continue down there....
