As Mal said, most of the ferries leave from Road Town, which is not a great place to stay. If it were ME, on Tortola, I would probably stay in Cane Garden Bay. It's a nice location, with lots of lodging and dining choices.

We are also Virgin Gorda fans and love making that our home base. We ferry around from there and or take the car barge to Tortola. ( we stay a month and rent a vehicle ) Check out this site for tons of wonderful villa options. https://vgvrbvi.com/
